the last before a general election and for this reason there is apt to be some thing of political campaigning In the actions of all parties I try my best to serve North York riding in a nonpartisan mariner and I can assure you requests which come to me from members of all political parties revolve my careful attention I try to keep these letters on nonpartisan basis as far as is within my power I will portray to you from week to week the Ottawa scene as I see it Let me say again that I appre ciate hearing from people of the constituency My mail averages letters per day arid I am helped a great deal in my work by the opinions sugges tions and criticism which I get from the people session wiUj likely con tinue until late in May arid un til then my address will be Jack Smith MP Parliament Buildings Ottawa No stamp is required on mail thus addressed For those who wish to con tact me personally I plan to be home in Richmond Hill every weekend I will be in my office in Richmond Hill every Satur day and I hope every constitu ent who has any business or problem with which may be helpful will feel free and wel come to consult with me I will do my best to help you This session starts in an atmo sphere of continuing interna tional tension However from contact with the highest auth orities of government here I feel that there is a belief that there is a lessening of the danger of an outbreak of war on a global scale Thirtysix percent of all the expenditure by your national government goes for strengthen ing our defence arid contributing to the defence forces of the dem ocratic world but your parlia ment is unanimous In the opin ion that a lasting peace can be assured only so long as the com bined strength of the free world continues to be built up and maintained This whole matter of defence expenditure is not in any sense a political question There may be criticism of the way money is spent but in the fundamental issue of making strong against any aggressor there is no difference of opinion even among political parties Our de- wealth and the world It is hoped the Conference may re sult in increased trade between Canada andBrUatn Irrespective of party there is very genera here of ap preciation of honor which has been conferred on Canada in the election of Hon L B Mike Pearson as President of the United Nations Organization It is a recognition of the service which he has rendered to the as sembly V There will be at this session a lot of discussion about national health insurance This is of course a worthy objective and I hope sometime it will be a reality in Canada However for the lime being it is just a little beyond bur means hope at this session a study will be made of the whole subject of Health Insurance with the view of ulti mately realizing its benefits for the people of Canada Frankly my own opinion is that we have to be very sure about any or all commitments we make to our fellow Canadians At the moment I am not sure it is definitely established that as a promise to the Canadian people we can carry out a def inite promise about health in surance Therefore for the present the best I can honestly do assure you that the govern ment is definitely sympathetic to the health insurance plan and that will work towards that end as far as is practicable with in the measure of my practical limitations National health in surance is i an objective towards which we are working but just when we will attain that goal is not easy for me or anyone else to predict I agree with you most of my readers that health insurance is a worthy and com mendable goal but just when or how we are to reach it is the question in Canadian polities MOUNT The monthly meeting of the Mount WA will be held at the home of Mrs Harry Smith on
