who won very considerable fame as a gentle man who knew what words really meant defined sport as a noun meaning that which diverts and makes mirth pastime amusement If Mr was around today he might alter the defi nition He might remove the word mirth For there Is tittle more real fun in the major realms of sport It has become a very serious business with few laughs there is my mirth then it is striclly coincidental and unintentional In fact the athletes of today arent even characters as we knew such in oilier days when there was less money more laughs Theyre cold calculating and skilful workmen It wasnt like this in the not so old days when sport had its sports- The guys and gals too had personality There are no more roistering characters such as for in stance the late Harry Pittsburgs bouncing boxer who buffeted his way lo the world middleweight title Grubs deviations from what were known as routine training methods won him fame of a sort Certainly notoriety Once In New York he rolled out of bed late in the afternoon went to the hotel harborshop requested a shave and a face massage hot towels It had been a rough night- The barber asked courteously Who do you think will I win the fight tonight Mr Or eh Replied Harry indifferently Whos fighting you are Mr said the amazed barber He wag right too Out west they recall lurid tales of big rugged who played major hockey both cost and west was careless about training loo He played so poorly for one season that the late Champ advised him he would have to report In shape the next fall of da without a contract Ho bought a pair of pants three sizes too big for himself donned them reported to Champ When the manager him about fan his hand around the top to show how much larger they were for him as a result of his program of getting In shape It cost me for those pants but I got a re called one of hockeys great alltime defense players was a paradox practical joker oft the let a hard man on it One night while he was managing Montreal Maroons the Governor General of Canada present the Montreal Forum as patron and guest of honor at a big Christmasbasket charity boxing event Ho was invited to the Maroon dressingroom to meet the players who were hurriedly summoned Just as the Governor General and his staff were making a dignified entrance a horrified Forum official noticed had a buzzer attached to his hand He was instructed in hasty whispers to get rid of it Surely said the official you were not going to shako hands with the Governor General wearing thine Certainly I was said Cleg peer the Governor looks bored Men la no such humor around the major sports wheel Big money has out the laugh made it serious SPORTS COLUMN I- boxing show Is sort of l and for cobnut will by CorVwr St DISTILLERS LIMITED
