1 r it i- AND TtD llpjt CHRISTMAS TO WALTER JOHNS AND STAFF Blake Tear Appointment Phone Aurora 596 ITS A Womans World By Caroline Ion The calendar said it was Dec The radio announcer stated there were only more shop ping days until Christmas The children urged us to hurry or wed miss Santas arrival in New market Everyone seemed aware of the situation except the weath erman Where was the snow the ice the nippy breezes What a mix- up that man has been in this year For the football games earlier he had the ground cov ered with a beautiful blanket of snow But when Santa was tim ing his visit to town there wasnt even one in sight Who cares if it was more com- waiting for the parade to arrive in weather above the freezing point Who is concern ed at a time like this with the saving in fuel such mild weather affords What we wanted was atmosphere This was Santas big day For after all his later important activities are carried on in the stealth of night On Christmas Eve he has no audi ence no applauding children gathering with their parents to greet his arrival Its a shame that the weatherman belongs to the Brock Chisholm school the old But did come to New market on Saturday snow or no snow He was welcomed by hundreds of the small types from town and the surrounding dis trict who gathered with their parents lining the parade route Later when these same hordes of shouting happy youngsters descended on the town hall we wondered for a while if the old building could withstand such an onslaught It did we might add The parade was fine The chil dren liked it and the parents were pleased because the chil dren were happy But for our money we preferred the local efforts of previous years This years parade lacked sparkle and gaiety We didnt see the par ade last year but we have mem ories of one such event when a group of drum majorettes all local high school girls put on a smart drill number in front of the post office The parade on Saturday seem ed almost pathetic in its lack of fun and merriment Of course you cant take youngsters in off the streets and merely by putting them in costume with a little makeup transform them into ac tors and actresses who can suc cessfully carry off such a show as a Santa parade It takes prac tices many of them There was the reason for the successful drum majorette number The one came along which the fathei felt the children could appreciate Look he said Hickory dickory dock the mouse raj up the clock His small looked at it carefully and said Why Yes we preferred the persona touch of the locally produce parade Why in other parade we even knew the drivers of tractors and trucks When the waved it was to greet a In the crowd not just a motioi which must be made Unles the parade Is on the grand seal of the Toronto venture it is kept to local talent The en of the amateur mop than compensates for the ease the professional There were many floats in the parade Ann Crowder to he friends looked very charming her stagecoach The Farmer the Dell and other nursery friends took their places with the two local bands and other floats Perhaps next year it will be possible to have a hometow product for our Santa parade We are well aware of the fac that this big job is too frequentl left to one or two overworked individuals Everyone agrees that there should be a parade but no one wants to assume the re sponsibilities involved Every one argues that they havent time This is their busiest sea son But we feel that the Santa Claus parade should be consid ered as an essential part of the local businessmens mas preparations They find time to dress their windows to display their merchandise attrac tively for the Christmas shoppers If plans for the event could be started early during the slacker weeks which precede the Christmas it wouldnt mean so much work at the last No one thinks to leave the planning of the Trade Fair until the first of August We want to thank those who provided a Santa parade for the towns children We appreciate it It was a big thrill for the young ones But for next year perhaps a committee of the mer chants could be formed early in the fall and a local one provided It is in the merchants own inter est to provide such a drawing card to shoppers at this season Satisfied visitors to the towns stores will return later for fur ther shopping expeditions WWS
