the first prize group was the record of the York County Baby Beef Club in the sensational Kings Guineas class at the Royal Winter Fair The Guineas Class began by means of a fund established by the late King Edward and is open to calf club members only Annually it brings out a very large entry of the finest beef calves in the province An audi ence of several thousand enthusi astic supporters filled the stands around the large ring of the Coliseum while the judging was in progress Bill Arkinstail of 2 New market had the champion steer in the Aberdeen Angus class Margaret Newmarket Jean Brumwell Gormley and David Evershed of Aurora also showed Angus calves and all placed in the first prize group- In the Shorthorn class judge Yule of Calgary finally placed the roan Shorthorn I steer owned by Easton in the Reserve Championship spot- Other exhibitors of Shorthorns were Jccelyn Sylvia ton arid Isobei Hood of The Grand Champion over all breeds this year went to a Here ford steer exhibited by Richard of Granton On the day following the show the calves are auctioned off to the highest bidder The cham pion Angus steer owned by Bill Arkinstail brought per pound while Reserve champion sold at a pound The Guineas Class completes a very successful year for the York County Baby Beef Club Earlier in the year Sylvia of Gormley and Brownie Weir of were Provincial Cham pion beef judges and then dur ing the first week of the Royal they took pari in the National Club Contests In the national contests Syl via and Brownie were two of contestants coming from all pro vinces except Newfoundland Each of the contestants had to he a champion judge in his own province before being allowed to enter the Dominion competition During the week the group had headquarters at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto Following the competition on Monday they travelled to many points of in terest including a visit to the International Harvester plant at Hamilton Brocks Monument at Queenston and Niagara Falls They were also guests in Toronto at the Ice and the Royal Winter Fair Horse Show On Thursday the group en trained for Ottawa where they were received by the Governor General and Lady Alexander at Hall Also at Ottawa they were enabled to tour the Parliament Buildings and to see Parliament in session During tour many strong interpro vincial friendships were estab lished and final farewells result ed in many sad faces Congra tulations on a job well done Sylvia and Brownie The National Club Contests are under the supervision of the Canadian Council on Boys and Girls Club Work which celebra ted its 21st birthday this year The general secretary of the Council is Mr A of Ottawa while the public rela tions officer is James Moore formerly with the Ontario de partment of A St Andrews Presbyterian church Newmarket The well attended meeting was held at the home of Mrs J D Faris St Mrs Joseph Greer presided The devotional period was con ducted by Mrs Atkinson and Mrs V Arrangements were mode for the Christmas party which will be held in the church The elec tion of officers will take place at this December meeting Final plans were completed for the tea and bazaar
