CHURCH Last Sunday evening was the second Youth Rally at the Friends Meeting House New market A group of young people from Toronto Central Baptist Seminary brought fine messages in word and song at pm followed by community singsong at Next Sunday Nov a Song Group will be present from Toronto Bible College The at tendance is increasing Come and join us in these services All welcome A complication is that the roads are heavily built upon Their reopening would require the moving of several homes not to mention an endless amount of arbitration to settle claims between buyers and sell ers owners and township The fact is however that the roads placed on tho Keswick town plan in 1U69 end on the shores of Lake and ac cording to federal law roads ending on navigable waters simply cannot be closed These roads were closed however during the of Roches Point in The reassessment this year resulted in the discovery of the roads Apart from the legal as pects of the situation Mrs Link contends that the roads should be reopened to give access to land back from lake to pro vide car and park space which the crowded resort community badly needs The history of the roads is link with Ontarios past They were originally intended as thoroughfares in what Gover nor planned as the future capital of Upper Canada chose the present site of Roches Point a new capital because lie thought Toronto too vulnerable to attack by Ameri cans He planned to call the new capital Keswick It would be linked with the Ottawa river on Die east Georgian on west to provide a sale in land waterway in event that the Americans ruled Lake Ontario In plan discarded Keswick given to its present owner and the old Keswick became Roches Point But the roads still remained at least on old Keswick plan When the village was resur- veyed in the roads were incorporated as building lots says Mrs Link and because roads ending upon navigable waters cannot be closed she contends the roads were closed illegally The roads bear names which are part of the history of the district One of them Is called Copt Mays Road A dock built by this man Is still In use and farther up the road the remains of a trading post are still in use as a cellar The other roads are Jack son St Rowan Mossington and Gib St Turner Ave and lot plan In the meantime the reassess ment which discovered the dis crepancies is complete and to day the assessor began holding preliminary talks with property owners who ques tioned their new assessments Mr Mogg plans to keep of fice open from am until pm as long as is necessary to explain to residents how he re assessed If owners are still dissatisfied they have the opportunity to ap peal to the court of revision STREET LIGHTS EAGLE TO YONGE URGED IN COUNCIL Street lights on both sides of Eagle St out to Yonge were proposed by DeputyReeve J I recently After all it Is our main artery and it will show where the town is ho said Last week Mnyor Vole said that it was not practical to put light poles on both sides be cause the poles would be bo- hind trees on part of the south side of the street we put them In front of the trees they will be a traffic hazard he said In order to have good I think we should put them on both sides of the road said Mr Its the main en trance to town and attracts traf fic from the highway Yes if Davis Drive becomes the main artery its town said Councillor Dale MEET There will bo an organization meeting of the Newmarket Lib eral Association at the New market council chambers In town hall at tonight Plana arc to be made for the coming election campaign Era Flies
