arranged engage ment with Mr Stork had pre vented us from attending the fair in 1950 This year a session of following an oper ation was lengthened by a septic sore throat As the days passed we feared that for a second year we would have to depend on others for reports on this project However we made it on the last evening of the fair It was certainly worthwhile even if our voice sounded Gravel Ger ties and our throat felt as if it was lined with sandpaper by the end of the evening One of the nicest features about such a town undertaking is the opportunity if affords for renewing acquaintances Why we talked with folks we havent seen for months One reason no doubt for the throat causing fur ther troubles Notes were com pared on the childrens progress brief accounts of each familys summer activities were told and of course through the fabric of all conversations ran the thread of praise for the Trade Fair Individual exhibits were prais ed as they appealed to the visit ors Eugene McCaffrey and his committee had some reward for all their work in the congratula tory remarks made about them Judging from the attendance rec ords everyone in the district must have visited the fair at sometime during its successful fourday run We were amazed at the variety of articles exhib ited We were impressed at the remarkably fine shopping facili ties Newmarket has to offer the public When we first stepped onto the floor of the arena we won dered if we hadnt gone by mis take to one of the CNE build ings The local displays were equally as well arranged decorated booths exhib ited a variety of articles which are all available from Newmar ket merchants and businesses The beautiful glads and other flowers entered in the local Hor ticultural Societys show added greatly to our enjoyment of the affair Glads make an impres sive showing with their wide range of color and when there are many hundreds of prize spikes on exhibit it is a sight which no flowerlover can for get For the members of the Horti cultural Society the sponsoring organization it has meant a great deal of work to prepare and pre sent such a show It was after 2 am on Saturday when the last of the exhibits of vegetables and Yes Newmarket has a right flowers were placed None of that work could be started until Friday even ing Then in the morning there was the judging of the exhibits produce such a first class show entirely by local effort The Newmarket Annual Trade Fair has come long way from its modest beginning in That year the Newmarket Horti cultural Society invited a few to exhibit arts crafts and local mer chandise when the Society held its regualr summer glad show The show was held in the market square and the town hall Those behind the idea saw the possibility of reviving a fall fair in Newmarket They were pleas ed with the general response that first year but even the most op timistic could not have foreseen such an expansion within three years There seems little need to I the Trade Fair in detail with the show committee on duty during the remainder of the afternoon and evening Speaking to many of the mer chants and other exhibitors we were pleased to hear how en thusiastically their exhibits had been received Even on Satur day night after four days of fair besides all the hours of planning and preparation which must have proceeded them they were de lighted with the response Later as they went about the weary task of dismantling their dis plays it must have been with a great deal of persona and com munity satisfaction for the com pletion of a very welldone job Newmarket
