invited our string trio to assist with the music Larry eight years old shows signs of trying lo break himself of a swearing habit of two years duration When Larry first began using foul words he did Despite the fact that the atten tion varied from laughter to strict discipline Larry was en couraged in his practice of foul words because of the attention he received In time he dared not let loose at home but he still enjoyed popularity among the older boys on the street They even bribed him to repeat unac cepted words thereby widely in creasing his improper vocabu lary Because Larry resorted to bad language when he wasnt get ting things his own way he be came the bad boy to bo avoided by the children of his own age With considerable effort Larry tried to confine his improper vocabulary to those who apprec iated it and rewarded him with encouragement and bribes It hardly seems necessary to mention how unfair were those who egged on Larry as a source of their own amusement As Larry grew a little older ho seemed to sense he was being laughed at and teased and he didnt like the idea One day Larry was obliging a request of his favorite uncle After he had given him a few choice words he stopped abrupt ly His uncle was surprised and questioned whether or not he knew any more Larry replied I know plenty more but I- wont teach them to you Its just possible that Larry has reached a stage in his growth when he is ready to out wit the morons who have been making sport of his youthful ig norance In any event it isnt fair in any sense of the word to encourage young minds in prac tices that interfere with the normal healthy growth of the child Perhaps Larrys experi ences with the outside world may serve to strengthen his faith in his own parents just and helpful treatment of him There is never any question of our accepting this invitation for we think it is the duty and the pleasure of each one of us to help make the life of older peo ple as bright as can be for why should not the sunset of life be like our evening sunsets a glory and a radiance When we arrived at the home we were welcomed by Mr Arn old and Chum the dog of the home and made our way to the chapel There is something very touch ing in looking into the faces of a group of old folk There is so much of their lives behind them that their eyes seemed turned in ward toward the past and have to withdraw themselves from that contemplation to find the pres ent Dr Margaret who was to speak to us officiated at the piano and we sang some of the hymns that most of us learned at our mothers knee and then Mr Millar read the lesson and led in prayer I do not know whether a Sunday afternoon ser vice is to any of you what it is to me a glass reflecting the memory of childhoods Sunday afternoons With the great fam ily Bible between us mother and I lived all the wonderful Bible stories and the wonderful en gravings have fixed the ideas I have of Bible characters so firm ly in my mind that they will never be erased Moses and Joseph were my heroes of the Old Testament and years have never changed my admiration The Lord Jesus St John the Divine and the Blessed Virgin called forth my adoration in the New Testament But to get back to our ser vice Always when Dr Margar et speaks there is a simple sin cerity a rockfirm conviction and a tender charity in all she says Her theme was the love of Christ for us and she quoted St Pauls remarkable affirmation that nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord She took each of the things which might be supposed to have power to separate us told of that power and its might and tenance so we had to share my was restored he came back and at once of laid him down to sleep to sleep violin not both course Then Chum the large and friendly dog thought it was his duty to lend his presence to the proceedings I can see his face of You cant do this to me pro test as the violins started The piano he could take but not no most decidedly not the violins so he retired When quietness and also to snore and had to be roused and reminded of where he was All was serene till the violins began again and then with a look of compounded disgust re signation and dignity he walked out nor was seen again till peace reigned He is a dog with a personality yet showed mtle might it really had if we put our trust in the Rock of Ages She made us feel how firm was the foundation of our faith The Misses sang sweetly a duet whose words were a reflection of the beauty of the day and the rest it sym bolized Mr Millars prayer and the few words he spoke emphasized the simple beautiful truths to which we had listened He and Mrs Millar have these services much at heart and try make them what they should bright cheerful and inspiring In Lighter Vein There are often in these in- formal services some happening which is not on the record We have come to the conclusion that the Home has a particular jinx which it brings out
