govern- to form an Upper Holland Valley Conservation authority The decision followed a meeting in the New market council chambers last Thursday night There have been complaints already from district farmers that their welts have been low ered as water consumption in the two municipalities has in creased with their growth The organization of a conser vation authority was first sug gested by A Richardson chief conservation engineer of the de partment some time ago at a meeting of the Aurora Board of Trade At first it was proposed that every municipality which touched on the Holland Valley be included but this proved an unwieldy arrangement Several meetings were called in the in tervening months but lack of quorum prevented any action from being taken More recently it was proposed that the suggested authority be reduced to those municipalities with an immediate interest in the Holland Valley A conservation authority is financed in part by grants from the government in part by a share of cost from each munici pality An authority is concern ed with every phase of conser vation from the building of dams and Aurora face potential and such large works to water shortages in the years reforestation programs and ahead unless something is done cation in conservation practices to conserve present water sour- on the farm Story Of Labor Growth Told At Union Meeting Review municipalities to appoint ft- their representatives to the au- k and a survey will be J made of the valley by the gov ernment without tost to the member municipalities The work of the authority will then begin with the survey act ing as a guide The decision of the municipal ities is welcome Both For Pension Form At PO Application forms for old age pensions are now available in all district post offices Persons who are already re ceiving government old age pen sions do not have to fill out new application forms Their names and addresses are being obtained from provincial records and transferred to federal lists with out any action being required on their part Ontario has approxi mately persons in this group Those who are receiving a pension will have it continued at that level those who are getting a partial pen sion will find it increased to Ontario has between and 180000 persons aged or over not now getting pensions who will be eligible for a pension under the new program It is essential that these people send in their applications immediately so that proof of age and residence in Canada may be checked and all arrangements completed for the first cheques to go out to ward the end of next January Delay in sending in an appli cation may mean that the appli cation cannot be put through In time for the January cheque is sue The longer the delay the less chance there is that the ap plication can he handled in time Applicants must prove their age and the proof should be sent along with the application form Birth or baptismal certificates are best evidence Other docu ments that will be considered in clude records in family Bibles church rolls or registers mar riage records communion certif icates passports and acknow ledgements of age by insurance companies If an applicant cannot send evidence of this kind he is ask ed to send any documents he has which will support his claim of age These documents will be returned If an applicant can not send anything to prove his age he is asked to send in his application anyway stating that he has no documents to support his claim of age He will be told what he must do about proving his age t n of the Office Specialty Mfg Co Ltd and the Bender Casket Co Ltd Mr said he remem bered times when possession of a union card could cost a man his job even physical mishap yfe have come a long way since then and at limes it has been a real struggle he said He described the development of the labor movement since the turn of the century to the prcs- Today labor sits in to hear the views of the workers These conventions in pared embodying those views and presented to the govern ments The governments do listen to the briefs as is evident in the legislation which has been put through in the past Not all suggestions arc accepted lie said fact some definite ly turned down He urged the employees in Newmarket to get behind their union and back it to the limit If you stick with your union he said you will be helping Col I Why Not Pool For Newmarket What about a swimming- pool for Newmarket Isnt it about time we had one In a sidewalk conversation this week a local builder suggested that a swimming pool could be built quite cheaply by using cement blocks plugging them with cement and waterproofing their surface The blocks could be laid by volunteers he points out and with enough the job wouldnt take long We dont know how practical the suggestion is but we do know that if enough people in Newmarket want a swimming pool there are the resources and the volunteers to make it possible All that is required is a group to start the project At the present time the Lions club is sending the children from its supervised playground to a near by lake for weekly swims How simpler it would be to have our own pool There is more to the suggestion than providing recreation Think of how many Canadians drown each year because they cant swim or arent sufficiently used to water to know how to act in it Every child should know how to swim Its knowledge they all need at one time or another They should be able to learn to swim at home under proper supervision They can if we build a pool And that pool can be built if some one or group will head up the project Newmarkets tackled bigger jobs than that Weve a topnotch artificial rink Were getting a floodlit ball diamond We can have the swim ming pool the same way if we want to and who doesnt want to when we all know how important it is to know how to swim So about how about it Whether concreto blocks or by some other way a pool can be build simply and cheaply if we all pitch in All that is needed is a start ft X A HUMANE SOCIETY TRUCK KEPT BUSY INTEREST INCREASES The new truck of the North York Humane Society has been kept busy since its
