turn out of fans to sec our youngest in action at municipality have not been made known For that matter little is known of plans for next winter at either arena Newmarket of course is profitably operating this summer for various events Aurora still lacks the promised floor which would at least give an opportun ity for profit We recall manag er Tom Dickson telling us in good faith in late April the floor would be started soon As a contrast to the still un known picture of the two public ly owned arenas lets have a look at the nearest privately owned arena of a comparable size in the district Perhaps were being a bit in say ing comparable size for to which we refer doesnt seat as many as either ill li mil- mam OXVIS HUES J BILL a if ruiuc THURSDAY SATURDAY JULY 1921 VJ v i i ft r Dickson Aurora So when we present the facts of the oper ations of Stonffville arena we have no kick about cither Stan or Tom and know you have nt either They dont come much better Recently the Stouffville arena company held its annual meeting and reelected George Allison exMount Albert sportsman now resident in Stouffville back to office as president arena which cost something over 100000 in private capital less the donation of the site and one or two of assistance from the civic authorities had a net operating profit of over ten grand after salaries and repairs and a clear net return to the village coffers of over has been made for water power and taxes The actual expenses were around 14000 The actual take was Main revenue items were hockey practices 714417 net return from hockey 1200 Tor onto Hockey League rentals 431120 public skating an item down from from skate grinding fees and a profit of from the op eration of the food booth con ducted for the first lime as an arena venture Clippers actually grossed so that the figure of represents less than a 25 percent take from the team a figure that must make those behind the Spitfires Rockets In dians and Bears and Cubs wince somewhat We were surprised at these hockey figures Perhaps they contain the odd gate or two of Mark ham Millionaires but be that as it may the net result to the hockey teams no matter where it went speaks for itself No one could accuse the share holders or arena management of not treating the teams fairly Its no secret that despite this generous allotment of revenue from the gates the Clippers went deep into the red Arc they downhearted The answer comes in a resounding no for already Tim and the boys have had a summer get together and made plans for next winter The directors refused to take any fees voted to pay the money left over off the gross debt and the present rote after two years of operation the money raised by way of mortgage or loan will be paid off in two years ami the investors may even make a buck or two for themselves in the fu ture Sounds something like the story of Maple Leaf Gardens in a modest way Wo will be greatly surprised If the figures for Aurora or New market will even give hope that some few years from now we shareholders may have such i T GUESTS WELCOME il how much actual cash the res pective towns have in the arena You should acquaint yourself with a true actuarial picture We all should know how we face next season right now Of course it will be said that neither municipality is in the arena business to make money We have no with that cither on an overall picture if some of the looked- for advantag es to local groups local young sters and local hockey teams be come a reality No one expects that the arena commissions will not try to run the arenas on a sound business basis that is the way we expect them to discharge their trust public servants On the other hand we dont think the men who invested in arena ever hoped to clip coupons or pay income tax on the returns from rink They wore equally civic conscious and did a job the municipality refused to do We think they can take a bow for a job well done No I one expects miracles but it will be interesting to compare figures in either red or blue Newmarket and Aurora with those made public at by the private company July jottings Mitchell- son of Red Mitchell arid who starred as a hockey player for Lindsay Midgets the past winter is equally outstanding as a base- bailer Mitchell won all three games at the Lindsay tournament last week while operating with an injured
