BOND for or 20 Ml WW well all run away just exactly the same weve said all these years The is very popular for it is the earliest holiday we get out of doors This year was an especially wonderful day Queens weather youll hear old timers say with memories of other when the weather was fine and warm same as last week And what a night for fireworks Warm and no wind weather exactly suited for cele brations along that line We older ones enjoy it as much as the younger generation I do not think there is anyone who does not enjoy fireworks Maybe not the noisy firecrackers but those delightful set pieces the Roman candles the many- colored rockets the fountain the Katherine and the pinwheel and Pharoahs serpents and the burning of the school house as one kind is called We had all those and no doubt more kinds as well for was at a fireworks party where several families had pooled their sup plies and I assure you the re sult was all that could have been desired It was really delight ful and to see the children wav ing the sparklers and taking so much fun out of it while the menfolk and older boys set off the large pieces We are all young at heart that night when it dark enough for fire works However the small folk did not think much of having to go to school next day but I do not think they minded at the King George school at any rate for as we drove past in the car we saw that they were having fire- drill The gay red painted new fire truck and the firemen were all there and on both sides of the school the children were lying flat on their tummies on the grass as we drove along ex pect the upstair scholars had come down the chute the fire escape what do you call it Any how that big round galvanized pipe down the south side of the King George school We just happened along at the right time to see the children lying on the grass and it recalled oldtime firedrills when I was in it not watching others How we all jumped when the fire gong off How we lined up and trot ted the and out-of- doors We thought it was fun of course Tulip Time The whole town is gay with tulips I have seen so many lovely displays in every part of town If you want to see folks gardens just take a ride round town on the local bus for it cov ers so many streets and you will see tulips in many many gardens One garden I saw that is not pass ed by the bus a garden away on Niagara St north of Davis Dr that Mr Oriey Hayes ol the Horticultural Society has rented it was full of multicolored tulips tulips of every shade and color and he had still more at his home Tulips are so satis factory and make such a wonder ful show I hope to see Mr and Mrs Kidds garden over the weekend Did you ever see a squirrel jump up to the edge of a bird bath and have a drink I never did till this year though I ex pect they have been doing it right along They are nimble little creatures One day the sparrows chased away a squirrel having a drink no doubt the squirrel hud been annoying them or may have even robbed the nest for this is the season for baby birds We have as usual our family of robins and how the baby robins do squawk and the parent birds are so worried and anxious The blackbirds arc a continued men ace round here and Mr and Mrs Robin have many a fight with them My neighbor saw a blackbird attack a baby sparrow the other day and it defied her as bold as could be when she attempted to drive it off It came back and finished off the tiny be fore she could intervene again But oh watch out for cater pillars I found several nests on my chokecherry tree hut they were tiny ones and I burned them in the fire tin before they had started on the cherry tree I watch that tree every day for fear more will develop or come marching in from somewhere else Another neighbor had a queer experience Her doorbell rang and it was some small boys who told her shed better watch out for her tree the caterpillars were after it They took her out to see and sure enough there were caterpillars on march Prime Minister Prime Minister and Mrs St Laurent recently moved in as the first occupant of No Sussex Street Last week the Prime Minister and his charming wife held their first reception in the official res idence and had as guests mem bers of the Senate and the House of Commons and their wives The new official residence is an imposing looking large stone structure with spacious lawns and a beautiful view over looking the picturesque Ottawa River The reception was quite infor mal and featured by the warm hospitality for which the Prime Minister and his wife are noted The home is spacious and well furnished but while the furnish ings are good they could not be termed loud or lavish and every thing seemed in excellent taste It is a fitting home for Canadas matter which is receiving in tensive study at the moment and it will take some time to work out the details The pensions for those in the age group will still be bas ed on the need of individuals World Situation The international situation continues to occupy the centre of real concern here and there is no use kidding ourselves that it is not serious Speaking in Ottawa on Citizenship the Prime Minister said I am still hopeful we will have peace In the same address to some visiting high school students he told them that if we could just maintain peace they would see even greater and more wonder ful development in Canada than he had seen in his lifetime Foreign Minister Pearson told us this week that undoubtedly Iran ranked next to Korea as the trouble spot of the world and that it would be too bad if Iranian oil was lost to the wes tern democracies and worse if it went to other countries Turnover Tax There has been much said and written about the suggested pro vincial sales or turnover tax It has been suggested that Dominion government might seek a constitutional amendment Last Saturday we had an in teresting talk with Bill J who is sometimes called Georgina Islands Almanac Mr be large as life claims to have had a very good winter About a week ago he went fishing first time in over years and he caught a fish Oh about this long stretching his arms full- length He tells us that he caught it early in the morning employing something which he called silver- spoon tackle It was good too he said We tried to find out Mr Asqua- opinion of tourists but he wouldnt commit himself He did however tell us something about guiding He was a guide for one summer but he hated rowing so much that he never tried it again Modern guides have an easy life he said About the only thing that could happen to lessen their fun would be for their mot or boat to stall and that is very AUTO sf TRUCKS TRACTORS FOR SALE USED TIRES TUBES GENERATORS AND STARTERS prop Davis Dr east of hospital first minister and will fill a long- j to provide Tor such a tax I felt need in our national life Old Age Pensions Revision of Canadas old age pension legislation is now almost a certainty for this year Pro vincial representatives conferred with federal cabinet ministers and officials last week ironing out the details of the new plan The universal pension for all at age will be on a contribu tory basis Just how the contri butions will be collected is a see no need for alarm regarding suclf a possibility and any such action scorns highly improbable Re quest for such an amendment would first require the unani mous consent of the provinces and no such unanimous consent would appear likely To the many who write me regarding this matter I suggest that the prospects for such objectionable tax ever being imposed are at the moment very slight The exclamation point is gra dually going out of use People arent surprised at anything any more In the Canadian dollar has about onethird of its buying power in
