Ontario YOUNG HOPEFULS Must Know They re Loved Shell soon be back her cheque cashed her deposit made her bank book written up Mrs Johnsons is one of the 3200000 new bank accounts opened during the past ten years Like most people nowadays she relies on her bank to safeguard her money she expects her bank book to show how she stands she finds bank cheques to pay larger bills Lois at five years isnt sure her mother loves her very much She spends most of her play time next door with Judy another fiveyearold Lois has seen numerous displays of affection that have been shown Judy by her mother On this particular day the two girls had been playing party in the backyard After they were finished Judy suggested that they show their mothers what they had used for the flowers on the table They had stacked a little pile of stones on the cen tre of the table and carefully stood blades of grass in the cracks Lois was very much in favor of showing Judys mother but didnt want to bother her own mother Now all mothers are busy people and their offspring can he real nuisances at times However when the child doesnt realize he is a nuisance he feels happier and more secure in his own home Judys mother was in the midst of baking and couldnt easily leave her work but she said she wished she could see the centre piece the girls had made then she asked them to tell her all about it Her interest was con veyed through conversation and there was scarcely any interrup tion in her work The girls were delighted to have their original idea appreciated to such an ex tent Judys mother thanked the girls for describing all about their entire makebelieve party and sent Judy away with a wee kiss Judy still thought they should Lois mother but Lois was just as sure they shouldnt Lois explained My mother doesnt love mc as much us your mother loves you Judy questioned How do you know that Lois replied The only time she ever kisses me is when I go to bed It isnt as if both mothers didnt love both little girls equal ly Its just that Lois misses the outward display of affection that Judy receives so she doesnt think her mother loves her as much as Judys mother loves her Children need to know they are loved in order to feel secure in their own homes Dont be lieve they should feel secure and happy because they are showered and surrounded with material possessions they need to come in for their share of hugs and kisses in their own homes Those who attend the District Annual in June this year at Pine Orchard will hear her exceeding ly interesting report We of the Bogarttown WI heard a preview at the May meeting at the home of Mrs Harry West A few things she told us Id like to mention here One was the importance of local history Children should hear stories of their local communities they can be made as interesting as fairy tales This is one reason Mrs tage told us that the Tweeds- book is going to be of such value In it will be stored the records of each home and hap penings in the communities pic tures of the places and people add to the interest and there are few places in York county on which history has not laid an arresting hand Antiques stored in attics should be treasured and a little museum started even if its only in one room in a neighbors home Dr Maria Lantz an Italian woman gave a fine talk on world relations She urged the Insti tute members to lead the way in showing how sympathy and kindness can create a better world understanding A welcome to the stranger in a strange land means so much Miss Anna Lew is on the spur of the moment presented Dr with an hon orary membership in and the pin of the WL Dr was deep ly touched and as deeply apprec iative One thing the conference urg ed If you have a guest speaker meet her make her welcome and above all give her a hearing even if you have to leave bus iness till afterwards Cultivate courtesy and kindness at home and abroad and ask ourselves if we justify our place in the community This is only a brief resume of an excellent report given in Mrs own in imitable style Snow White Anyone who failed to attend the operetta on Friday night in the arena missed a delightful event Tier rising above tier of young faces eager alert and gay gave a splendid preview of the future citizens of Newmarket And let me say here that the childrens choruses were fine We could hear every word which spoke well for enunciation and pronunciation which the other half of the family and always have keen ears for And now a word about the principals The part of Snow White taken by Patricia Dunn was lovely In her beautiful cos- Air Heating she looked fairylike and her voice was lovely Clear and sweet and effortless one heard every word A tiny bit of stiff ness in acting will disappear as custom gives confidence Alma Stephens as the queen was magnificent and Im not speaking of her costume although it merited the word Her part called for very real acting and it reached its climax in the witch scene in the cottage Her voice always lovely was heard to great advantage in solos and duets and like Snow Whites we heard every word Ken Morton as Carl the Hunts man looked the part and played it well His voice was fine but we missed some of the words The same can be said of the prince as played by Lawrence Wright He made a splendid prince and his voice too left nothing to be desired but here again we lost some of the text The four principals were chosen with wonderful skill The little people of the woods in their daffodil and leaf green costumes were very dainty and sweet And now I come to the dwarfs and anything cuter or more in triguing would be hard to find We had our opera glasses and to look at those very young faces with the beards was irresistibly funny and in some queer way pathetic There was one with a black beard that wobbled when he talked who was a triumph All in all the dramatic director Dorothy Bowman the musical director Herman Fowler and the pianist Jean Rose can feel that they have added a real contribu tion to the musical history of Newmarket And let me say here what I have said before that in Jean Rose Newmarket has an accompanist who will be heard of in the future Sym pathetic accurate and obedient to the conductor slightest move she is a joy to watch a joy to hear and I know must be a joy to work with She and Patsy Dunn are young and they belong to our town Its up to us to encourage these artists of the future In closing let say that the public schools should make this an annual event Think about it please THE STEEL SHORTAGE IS ACUTE AND WILL NOT
