regarding our commission I make the following statement If the citizens of Aurora as the editor of the Banner inti mates are not satisfied with the way the commission is being handled my resignation is avail able at a moments notice This is a statement of facts and not a desire for publicity or controversial letters in the Ban ner George Baldwin Chairman of the Aurora Hydro Commission King Ci HYDRO The editor Newmarket Era and Express I was quite surprised to read in February issue of the Aurora Banner several references to the manner in which the Aur ora hydro commission is operat ing and I take exception to Ban nereditors remarks A room that hasnt had its windows open ed for three years must have gathered a lot of dust and become rather state Better get the win dows opened and let some air and light in He is not very informed it is eight years stead of three As he should know the ques tion of having the press at com mission meetings is a matter for each individual commission to decide for itself After investi gating the work being done by other commissions and forming our own conclusions we decided that the best work was being done by the commissions that held private meetings From the first commission that was in of fice to this date we have held our meetings in private the same as any other business organiza tion Now for the first time in our eight years of service our integrity is being questioned Who Pays the Piper or The Hydro Rumpus The Aurora Hydro Commis sioners have nothing to hide in Jact we are proud of what the commission has accomplished in its short eight years When Mr undersize wires and overloaded transformers This along with 5000 in bonds is what we re ceived Our commission along vith the superintendent started planning and working with the experts of tho Ontario hydro commission Every move we made- we asked for and received expert advice without charge after eight years of hard work on everyones part we can say that the system of our town is equal to that of any town of its size in Ontario and better than a good many We own and have installed over flat rate water heaters and this has cost is 2540153 Converted at No Cost In the fall of our town was converted from 25 to CO cy cle power and all it has cost the commission has been the purchas ing and installing of new meters The meters will cost the system approximately 14000 By plan ning ahead as we have been do ing we had the town all wired in sections and did not have to in stall any temporary lines for this conversion This is more than percent of the municipalities will be able to say when the time arrives for their conversion Everything previous to date of conversion has been on a basis We arc at present planning a building consisting of garage storage meter room work shop IS IT THE BEST The editor For some time I have been waiting an opportun ity ie the precious unoccupied rural hour to send along a thought or two engendered by your editorial remarks concern ing Pushing Butter Sales For Ithe benefit of the reader perhaps I should quote The dairy far mers of Ontario are asking for provincial aid in the development of an altdairy product butter substitute The new product upon which the Ontario Agricul tural College has been experi menting for the past several months would sell for about half the price of butter With mar- selling about to cents this means that the new product would undercut the mar garine price Before I would be ready to support the above rather excit ing offensivedefensive move I would want assurance at the top level preferably from the Canadian Federation of Agricul ture that the aforesaid all- dairy product butter substitute wont eat into total sales of No 1 creamery butter even to a greater extent than margarine is doing And one other point Mr Edi tor occurs to me I suggest it would be just ordinary prudence for the various provincial auth orities to get around the same conference table for the purpose of hammering out as national a policy as may be possible on this Battle of the Spreads If the alldairy substitute is good enough for Ontario how about its reception in Quebec and Maybe it would be wiser to concentrate upon Pushing Butter Sales and rely upon the potentialities of the tariff mech anism page the to bring valuations on vegetable oil im ports to appropriate levels Indusco Large a town employee on and office to be built on the lot a part time basis with the hydro cast of the old town hall on decided to resign Icy St We have our new sub- from the position of secretary of station on part of the property hydro we handled his in the following manner a meeting was called on Wednes day Jan to deal with the Remember the in bonds we received with the rundown system Well we still have sons for his resignation All them and they will bo used for points were fully covered and at our meter and building expenses the end of two hours everybody j A few months ago a great was satisfied Mr- Large was go- many towns had their hydro to stay on as our secretary rates increased but due to the The employees involved and the prof operation of our commissioners all smilingly shook and our good financial stand- hands ling our commission received a Two days later when I was in notice from Ontario hydro Ihe office I asked our secretory Aurora rates would not be how everything was going He raised This was good news said Fine Everything OK Always Acclaimed Then on Tuesday morning Jan Mayor Bell telephoned and asked me to come down to town office immediately I rived in a few minutes and informed that the assistant clerk would not take hydro money We held a meeting right then and I as chairman of the commission said that he must be relieved his duties a far as the hydro was concerned Mayor Bell and I informed Mr Large of this de cision After which he collected his two months wages that Coun cil had previously granted him and left the office in short time First Members In the year the late Mr and myself were elected to this commission as its first members A few months previ ously the town council had en gaged Mr Copland as super intendent As we had no office we were invited by the town council to run our office along with theirs The hydro auditor at his time drew up a schedule by which we would pay a percen tage of all the expenses of the town and we would have the service of the assistant town clerk We arc paying the town on the following basis building expenses percent light percent 1035 tele phone percent clerk percent 732 assistant clerk percent janitor 15 percent town auditor percent total will see it Is costing us over per year Regarding the actual work of the Aurora commission I might say that we started with an old rundown system which was in such bad condition that when Ontario hydro workmen had to do any repairs at our substation the main power switch had to be pull ed The condition of the trans formers wires etc were poor
