Goh is on the go after chemotherapy ends Continued from page 8 9 · Friday, July 20, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com According to the Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC), leukemia is the leading cancer diagnosed in children in Canada -- accounting for 26 per cent of all cases. Approximately 75 per cent of children diagnosed will have ALL. Between 2003-07, there were 1,257 cases of childhood ALL reported in Canada. Children who are diagnosed between the ages of 1-10 do the best with treatment, but overall children with ALL have a five-year survival rate of 90 per cent. "I would take that any day over 50-50, but a 10 per cent gap is still, as a parent, way too big. It's too huge. You just want it to be a 100 per cent with your kids," said Shen. Last year, the LLSC started using Lia as a "She's got the travel bug I think, so now poster child for the organization to help raise we've got a long list of places. I'm going to have funds and awareness. Her family will be partici- to take a year off to take her. We're looking forpating in LLSC's Light The Night Walk event in Toronto later this year. "We're a really private family, but I think if we can help with any causes regarding leukemia, we're all for it. We try to help where we could to raise awareness," said Shen. Now that Lia has finished her chemotherapy, the first thing she wants to do is travel. She's already been to places such as Hawaii, France and California -- but when Shen asked her, "Where is the first place you want to go when you're done?" Lia said, "Africa." ward to doing some of that with her." For information on LLSC, visit www. llscanada.org. Groups get funding news Funding for local community groups has been approved.
