Omemee boy prisoner of Germans in Paris 35 days

The following letter was received by Mrs. Chas. Hewitt, Cameron, Ont. from a friend in Peterboro which relates in point of fact, that Pte. Bruce Fairfield, well-known Omemee boy had some harrowing experiences while a prisoner of war in Germany.

The letter reads as follows:

I suppose you saw where Bruce was safe in a hospital in England.

He was captured in Paris by the Germans and was a prisoner of war for 35 days and when the Americans freed Paris, they flew all the injured prisoners back to England. He has a compound comminuted fracture of the left elbow. He sure was lucky. He nearly starved when he was a prisoner-of-war, cup of tea for breakfast, soup for dinner and supper. If it hadn’t been for the Red Cross they would have starved to death. The Germans took 1200 Franc away from him.

It sure was a relief to hear he was O.K. but I had a feeling he was all the time, but there were so many missing then that sometimes a person wondered. He thinks he will be home for Christmas.
