Titans win appeal, get win, first-round bye Oakville Titans general manager Josh Briscoe can set his mind at ease and the Titan players can rest their bodies for another week. The Titans won an appeal Wednesday night of a ruling by acting Sr. B commissioner Jim Bomhof that saw them forfeit a victory for what the Ontario Lacrosse Association ruled was the use of an ineligible player. As a result, the Titans 13-11 victory over St. Catharines was reinstated, giving Oakville an 11-5 record and a firstround bye in the Senior B playoffs. The original ruling stated that the Titans had not received a release for Dan Hamlett for the Major Series' Ajax-Pickering Rock prior to him playing in Oakville's June 16 game against St. Catharines. Hamlett had a hat trick in the win and went on to play in four of the Titans' five remaining games. "We always knew and maintained that we did not dress an illegal player," Briscoe said. "We were confident that we had completed the proper paperwork." Briscoe said it was the Rock that brought the situation to the attention of the senior B commissioner but their concern was more about ensuring they kept Hamlett's rights for next season. "We had our documentation," Briscoe said. "This is huge for our guys. They worked hard for this." Had the ruling been upheld, the Titans would have finished with a 10-6 record and dropped to fourth place. That would have meant Oakville would have had to play a best-of-three first-round playoff series. Now, with a week to rest, the Titans are likely to start the playoffs at home next Friday, though the schedule won't be finalized until their opponent is determined. --Herb Garbutt, staff writer Repic rewarded for effort Continued from page 31 35 · Friday, July 13, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com a.m., go to school from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. and then head back to courts until 6 p.m. All those hours have paid off in a more consistent game, Repic said, and has helped her improve her slice, which she considers her best weapon. For now, adding that national championship is her focus, which no doubt would attract a lot of attention.
