"This type of curbing is not heritage nor traditional. It is spoiling a beautiful streetscape in one of the nicest areas of our town." The Town's Infrastructure and Transportation Services Commissioner Dave Bloomer said Dunn Street is among the last streets in Oakville being converted from a tar-andchip road to a more reliable asphalt pavement. In preparation for the road improvement, Bloomer said Town staff were also looking at ways to improve drainage in the area, hence the addition of the curbs and water basins. "The way the road is Since 1952 A resident of the Old Oakville Heritage Conservation District is calling on the Town of Oakville to undue the damage, she said, it has done to the area and remove recently added curbing. "The homeowner to the north of Mrs. Rockliffe, they have a driveway in an area where the water does run off and goes through basically over their driveway." Rockliffe said in the 18 years she has lived in her home, she has never had any issues with water encroaching onto her property and questioned why the curb was necessary on her side of the street. She also said she does not understand why the Town and Heritage Oakville Committee decided to go with the raised curbing instead of the more gently sloped curbing present in other parts of the heritage district. "I have travelled all over Oakville in search of the curbing that was chosen for our street. This curbing cannot be found residentially or commercially anywhere," said Rockliffe. "This is a new style of curbing, setting a precedent for the whole of Oakville." Even Rockliffe's neighbors to the north, who have been trying to have a curb put in front of their property for the last 17 years to stop water from flowing into their driveway, were not happy with the type of curb built by the Town. "The curb we got was just extremely hideous. It's like nothing I've ever seen before in Oakville, in Toronto, in an industrial area, in a residential area," said Stephen Lucas. "I have a father who is in a wheelchair and I am not able to have him visit at this point because there is no way I can get him up over this curb and onto my property. There are too many stairs in the driveway and before he would come up from the See Seeking page 11
