Mines has brought out to the satisfaction of many prominent Of ficials who were present during the tour that peat ran he manufactured commercial success and thai as auxiliary fuel to coal it promises soon to lake an important place in Hie province All summer the peat committee which was appointed Jointly by the Federal and Provincial has been experimenting with various types of machinery to determine Whether or not peat could be manu factured at a price which would make it a commercial success and now as a result of the Ministers and the peat committees Inspection of the experi ments and the output for the summer Hie officials state that the summers work has been entirely successful thai the worst Mages are over and it only remains for some of the minor diffi culties to he straightened out a Ton f The work has been In charge of Mr Moore consulting engineer and as a result of ih- activities of Mr Moore been announced by Hon Mr peat can be sold a ton f- J- Alfred or any oilier hog which will make it perform the purpose whlop the peat com mittee Ib aiming That aim Is to make take the place of anthracite coal for Certain purposes and by replacing coal for these- definite cut down the amount of foal which It Is nccCHBOry to Import from the United States it Is estimated that when distribution of peal gels on a proper basis It will he able to replace least of lb anthracite now burned In the province- Naturally there are still difficulties In the way of an adequate distribution of the fuel bill Hon Mr Ferguson hopes that these will be overcome shortly The Freight Dlfflculttea Among the difficulties are freight rales and the establishing of distri butors hi the large cities and towns As soon as the output Is greater an effort will he made to overcome the first- obstacle through the Dominion Hallway Hoard by having peat put In a different freight classification while Mr Ferguson announces that an effort will be made shortly to have many of the larger municipalities such as To ronto Ottawa Hamilton London lake up the matter of dis tribution the public order IfiaV coal consumers may be made to ap preciate Hie advantages to tiederived through the use Of peat Though this seasons operations have been almost entirely experimental the peat millec has between and tons of peat ready for the Kail mar ket and In spite of the additional ex pense of experimentation It has been that I hoy will he able to sell product at a figure which will meet anthracite coal on a commercial basis Acres of Peat Bogs In mother yar the situation should he even more favorable for this pub lic utility as with the initial cos Of experiments eliminated and with a much greater output it Is felt that prices will be even more gratifying consumers The huge peat hogs in County running anywhere from to acres will pro vide millions Of Ions of peat of the highest grade while the machinery which has been Installed this season will bring next years output up 2r000 tons Apart from the fact the peat fields of Alfred are proving such a Mr Ferguson announces that they are hut the beginning of the development of a huge Industry to he carried on in the interests of the pub lic Now that It has been shown that peal can he turned out at a satisfac tory figure the next step will ho to look its manufacture In other cen tres There are nearly known pent hogs In the Dominion many of Which are In Ontario ami Is hoped to have more of them In operation shortly This work will he carried along two lines Plants There will he the manufacture of this fuel on a big scale at the larger hogs for general distribution and there will be an attempt lo encourage smaller to operate bogs In their locality for their own use In order lo make that possible the Gov ernment will design the necessary ma chinery to enable tie smaller bogs be operated by portable plants These plants It Is hoped will ho turned out by the Government and will be put at the service of the muni cipalities requiring them on much the same that the drain diggers are now being used by farming districts Mr Moore already has plans drawn up for these machines and It only re mains to have them constructed and tested Their output necessarily will be much smaller than Is the output of the plant In- operation here hut their product will be sufficient to meet Hie needs of the municipalities In ques tion and they will have the added ad vantage Of cheaper operations From the standpoint of fuel production the nan lure of peat as carried nut here simple enough It merely consists pi having the peal scooped out of the hogs by specialty constructed machines and then having it properly sundried for distribution To be continued next week THE LEADING Furniture and Undertaking House You can buy
