the of was given by Walter Torn Sanderson land En gineer Arthur Everest These men gave their evidence in the most clear and way that could be desired and showed thai understood Iheir work of looking after the boilers and that everything was running before the accident Evidence went to show that be boilers had been cleaned and in spected at regular times and Ibat the water glasses to the different boilers contained plenty of water just previous to the accident Considerable excitement was created as the Crown Attorney drew the evidence from Mr who gave evidence for a Boiler Insurance Company who had examined these boilers in April The evidence went to show that at different times dur ing the sixteen years the present boilers have been in position they have been troubled with the boilers leaking though they did not leak at the of Installa tion The next witness was Mr Combe a representative from the Boiler Markers Company at Mon treal He proved to be a very clever man as a boiler expert He gave a description of the exact way in which the end of the boiler became cracked that is theoretically speaking He also produced an report of an analysis of the water taken from the same well the boilers were at the time of explosion and showed by comparison with the report of the analysis of the water used by the Office Specialty Mfg Co and the Town Waterworks that it contained fairly high quantities of certain chemicals that arc not present in the latter two samples of water The IhCOry this chemical in the water acts on the interior of the boiler plate causing it to brittle and forming s surface A sample of the boiler plate has been sent to Connecticut for analysis and as no report an yet has been receiv ed the above theory for the deter ioration of the plate of metal forming the head of the boiler which blew out with such terrific destruction has not been Satis factorily established bo the jury brought In the verdict that the death of five victims had been caused by the deterioration of the metal in the boiler which could not have been previously delected and that neither the Cane Com pany nor any of their employees Were in the least negligent or responsible for the accident The Company Is so firmly venceri that the water bos been the cause of the defect in the and the cause of the ac cident that they are laying pipes to get a supply of water from the won derful POPULARITY It is possible for a person to j be undeservedly popular His popularity may not be due to good qualities but- to wealth or other advantages Many people honor a person for selfish rea sons They think it pays them to have his good will A humble person may after all have as many real friends as an honored one The friends of the former are generally true being friendly because of admiration for him and not are seeking favor He knows who his true friends are but the other doesnt When an ap parently popular man fails in a financial or any other way which reduces him to a humble posi tion he soon finds who his true friends are Unless he is a I very bad character one with friends is generally better principle than only a few enemies usually doesnt seek popularity but the latter generally does It is easy for anybody to become popular if he has the advantages When a person has only a few enemies they generally have good reasons for being such It is found thai many a popular man will be very generous in his deal ings with people he wants for friends hut unmerciful when dealing those whose friendship he doesnt desire One person may truthfully say of another that he may have acted good with nearly else but that he acted meanly with him DIFFICULTIES AIRMEN HAVE TO FACE only a few a man of is one with The former The statement on behalf of the British Aid Ministry that aviators are forbidden to fly lowed than 1000 feel above town suggests that the margin of safety is peri lously small in the event of en gine trouble in such an event the airman must come to earth inside a circle the diameter of which is ten times the height of machine and an altitude of feet gives him a choice over an area of barely three square miles or a horizontal distance from the point vertically beneath where his engine failed of less than a mile At feet the area is in creased to rather more than milesnone too much in the case of towns of any importance There is always the risk of mak ing a bail landing In cloudy weather especially when as often happens the clouds are less than 5000 feel above the ground At thai altitude an airman forced to land would have a choice over about square mies which Is considered about the minimum for safety la one of the essen tial requirements for the growth of Its functions aje a solvent and carrier of plantfood a food di rectly or indirectly for the it to maintain the plants in a turgid condition thus enabling them to stand more erect and resist the force of the winds Also the eva poration of the water from the sur face of the leaves equalizes the tern- of the plants Thus water serves the in no small way and so the farmer Is always very anxious each spring that his soil have sufficient water stored within It to supply the growing plants during the next three or four months when the rainfall may not be sufficient for their requirements The amount of water required for crops is rather surprising in humid regions they require from 200 to pounds for every pound of dry mat ter produced and In dry climates the amounts are about double of these Of- the ordinary farm crops he legumes including clovers peas and beans use the most water then comes potatoes next then In order oats buckwheat barley wheat rape raatze and millet The water that the plants take from the soil exists in the form of thin films around the soil- grains If the soil be well drained and other wise in good physical condition these films will occupy about one- half of the air space of the soil the other half being available for air which growth of the roots The water In the form of films has the power to rise up through the Boil grains In a manner similar to of the rise of oil In a larapwick or water through a lump of sugar This rise takes place more quickly and extends higher if soil grains be fairly fine and in a mellow and friable condition or In other words be In good tilth Water In ex cess of this film water should be drained from the soil otherwise the soil remains cold and the air is ex cluded from the roots roots Conserving the soil moisture con sists o getting as much as possible of tbe rains and of the buoy into the lower depths of the soil and In the second place pre venting tbe water that rises to the surface during the period of growth from evaporating The first can be secured by fall ploughing and in other ways making the soil surface as open and receptive as possible for the easy entrance of the water and the evaporation can be prevented to a large degree by keeping the sur face after the crops are sown or planted well mulched The soil I mulch one to three Inches deep Is found tobe very effective In keeping the film water from reaching the Bur- face and there evaporating under the sun and wind Ilie surface of the toll and this applies chiefly to heavy soils should not be allowed to be come crusted as a crust on the top cracks open ami allows the water to escape The best illustrations of mulching and Its good effects arc found in every welltilled garden but to a large degree the practice Ib practicable on the farms by a Judi cious use of the harrow and roller When the grain are rolled im mediately after seeding the harrow should be used if power enough be available both may be passed over the field at once Even after the grain is up 3 or Inches should a heavy rain pack down the soil the roller may be used to good advan tage In reestablishing a mulch The more frequently the corn and root fields are cultivated throughout the season of growth the more effective the mulch will be to conserve the soil moisture Graham USA O A College t M0BALV MPS- mm it LIVE UP TO WHAT YOU Live up lo what you learn Do not let your knowledge got too fur in sji- of your practice One who rails to set
