written to his sister Mrs PcggX Somewhere in Franco May 3rd Dear Pearl I got my birthday cake alright The box did not even have a dingo in it It was just month criming hut ev erything was Tho plug of tobacco looks good to mo The weather is line and very warm Not many trees left to throw out their leaves but hero and there one happens to he left The Germans are devils for destruc tion There are some awful bad smells here now t They dont bury anything very deep and first rain or a good wind takes the dirt off There have been some awful battles here lately but we arc safe at least we thipk so The antiaircraft guns are watching over us day and Tell mother I am well and tell father not to worry Alf O Oi following letter was sent by Garrett formerly of Bradford to his mother Ho is driving one of motor trucks France April My Dear Mother I should like to tell you where we arrived but I guess cen sor would cut it out Suffice it to say that of course it was one of the main ports and saw later a very nice city By spendirtg a couple of days there and having some driving around gave me the pleasure of taking it all in It was at this lime that I got my first glimpse of some German prisoners working on the railway After leaving we commenced another trip with he trucks but this time towards the actual point of business And this hundred and tour through France was certain ly a line opportunity to see and learn of the country It was nearly a three day trip so you can imagine extent Each night we stopped in a town so had some fun in visiting stores and making boss understand what we wanted Fortunately I have a churn who speaks French and we have gotten along fine Then too French money keeps us busy not that we have so much not at all at all 1 but that it is new to us Well wo have arrived very close to the business end of things and have already listened to the rumble of Hie guns and have seen the troops moving by thousands The aeroplanes too are the busiest brigade and are surely going some You will have read of tho great doings in this line A few days ago I saw a little air scrap but the enemy plane soon beat it home Our machines are evidently on the aggressive all tho lime This was the occasion since arriving that we have seen a scrap over our lines on the north of tho front The calvary loo have been op the aggressive and it does us good to think that an advance is being made You would be amaz ed to see the extent of the traf fic on- the roads around here What with tho marching troops cavalry and the endless stream of trucks and ambulances we have all easily been convinced that we would rather be driving around the busiest city Thus our lot even as chauffeurs is no cinch The roads ono would almost judge as impassable yet the signboards tell us whether lo risk it or no and thus the cars rumble along from one pitch hole to the next never hesitating with a thought for the car And yet amidst all the mud rain and slush you would be surprised to sec how clean all the trucks are kept After a trip every driver has to polish up and got all the mud off no small job on a big truck I You may bo wondering how we are doing for eats I am not complaining when I tell you that our daily menu for each meal is the army ration of Dully Beef and Biscuits Tea I must admit that occasionally we do get a change for at some meals we gel the beef served before the bis cuits I We are at a loss lo un derstand the meaning of these rations but wo believe that food supplies are being up lino to the boys In the reaches and if this Is the case I would no complaints on the continually poor boys deserve it all seen several Red Cross trains coming from the front and while there is often a smile of satfs faction at thoughts of getting dear old Blighty restricted efforts by the On tario Organization of Resources Committee body enlarged and enriched by the addition of a number of prominent private citizens from the ranks of agri culture labor and other has now widened Us scope end is performing even greater services for the province particularly in its efforts to copo with the food situation It was in tho legislature on March that Mr Row- ell seconded by Mr moved a resolution accepted by government calling for the most thorough organization pos sible of the resources of the prov ince for the successful prosecu tion of the war and the mainten ance of our agricultural and in dustrial production and recom mending appointment of a se lect committee to look into the matter including not only the work of recruiting men for the Canadian Expeditionary Foice but also of ensuring a sufficient supply of labor for the agricul tural interests and the necessary industrial operations of prow luce and of promoting thrift and among the people thereby strengthening our finan cial position during the war and preparing of the period of sub sequent reconstruction At the time Mr empha sized the importance of agricul tural development and the need of handling vigorously the pressing problem of farm labour which was becoming more and more ur gent as recruiting continued Mr Howells resolution was adopted unanimously A committee was appointed and as a result of their recommendation the Organization of Resources Committee was formed At first only members of the legislature sal on the com mittee it is to be regretted that outsiders who have proved such efficient helpers were not brought in earlier In conference with the agricultural interests they perhaps could have done something last year in agricultur al production and at any rale could have vorked out at a suffi ciently early lime more detailed plans for the present year Even as it is however committee has done and is doing splendid work which reflects great credit on the Opposition and the Gov ernment which brought it into be ing Importation of Liquor An extension of prohibition oven from the measures in force at present in Ontario Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta is be coming a live subject of discus sion For some time has been contending that either the Dominion Parliament should pass a measure of dominionwide prohibition during the war or as an alternative that they should enact a law which would allow any province to prohibit the man ufacture and importation of li quor by a resolution from the legislature of hat province or by a vole of the people of pro vince Mr emphasized the relation of liquor to the pres ent critical food situation What is there he has ask ed continue in this country he waste of food materials in the manufacture during war time of intoxicating liquor It is interesting to note that a similar campaign in Great Britain is being waged with the greatest vigor by the Spectator ono of the most Conservative journals in he British Isles Mr B Liberal mem ber for Humboldt in the House of Commons has given notice of a resolution to allow he provinces to prohibit the manufacture and importation of alcoholic liquors for beverage purposes Rumor at Ottawa thinks that the Gov ernment may adopt some such proposal Stop Gambling Although Woodbine race meet in Toronto and other meets throughout the province have been held this May as usual with largo attendances there are in dications hat public opinion against war time race track gam bling is having an and rumor says that tho Dominion stop all betting on race tracks for the period of he war after he 1st of July During the recent session of the legislature Liberals carried on a vigorous campaign against race track gambling during the war If is cut off province will lose according to the esti mate of the Toronto News about 125000 a year Those who favor be suspension of racing however claim the province would bo far better off with he direct loss of revenue which would he involved Directors of the Ontario Jockey Club arc not enthusiastic about the proposal One of them George Beard- more said that if he Govern- muni slopped racing Ihey should slop everything He thought
