divided into two sections No from Lake to Holland Landing nine mile and No 2 from Holland Landing to Newmar ket four miles It is proposed to utilize the Holland River from its mouth to the forks about four miles This will need dredging Thence it goes up the west branch for nearly a mile and cuts across to the east branch Little of the rivers bed can be utilized from here on as it is too winding Most of the land from the lake up to Holland Landing is swamp with hard pan a few feet below the surface In the Con struction Company this and soon quit work New tenders were called for but have nob been let The only portion where a serious attempt has been made is on section two Excavation has been done here and there probably for threequarters of th distance but less than one mile is in all The sec- lion between Holland Landing and the lake is nearly level but the land rises over 40 feet from the Landing to Newmarket and three locks will be needed one at the Landing one near bend and one a mile north of Newmarket with lifts- of 16 in and feet respectively Tho genera depth of the canal will be six feet The sides will be rip- rapped lined with loose stones ani above for a couple of feet
