Royal Commission appointed the charges and which was followed by an adjourn till Monday next Meanwhile it was ordered that all papers and on the case must be filed on or before Monday last and the city press tells us this was done These include written by Mr to the Cabinet Minis ters and one or two letters which passed between different members of the Cabinet and were filed by Mr Johnston on the part of the accused while those produced on behalf of Mr include the letters he made public in Legislature also letters from various personages which he incorporated his original state ment together with a synopsis of the shorthand notes taken by the three stenographers at the piano factory when Mr and Frank are said to have had a con versation bearing on the alleged charges Among the papers filed is an document written by Mr ey to Hon J in which he asks for a loan of This letter was referred to in the members statement in the House but has not been published it is dated Nov some weeks after a payment of is alleged to have been made to him and in which he offers to give notes as security for the above oan of Mr also explains in this letter that the reason he wants the money is that he has an oppor tunity of buying some timber lands at an advantage and has not enough ready capital He tells Mr further thai- he will he able to pay back the loan at the end of the session and asks an answer in haste as the offer to sell the lands will be open only one week According to the documents on the defence side this latter letter was answered by Mr Strat ums private Secretary who ac knowledges its receipt and then tells Mr that Mr is out of the city There is no further cor respondence filed to show that the request was granted Another tetter which has been fre quently alluded to and to which Mr Whitney referred during the discus sion of these charges in the legisla ture as indicating that the Premier had guilty knowledge reveals nothing against the latter hut clearly pro claims the duplicity of the man from as it indicates the prom ise of to support the Ross Government It was dated October and Mr says he posted it from Gore Bay These dates will all bear an important part before the enquiry closes In letter he says he desires to state that he will give the Govern ment his support He thinks its development policy will justify such action He further Hon Mr Ross that such being the case he can be depended upon to support the Government on all mo tions of a want confidence nature and he likewise requests that he only be treated as- he had been elected as a supporter of the Government The Stars report from which we have drawn the foregoing adds the following The letter is typewrite ten Three additions are made in writing apparently in the same hand as Mr Carneys signature at the bot tom of the page The first is at the top where is written the words private and confidential second Is where he first promises to support the Government and these words are written in vou have a reasonable majority when the House meets And the third is at a point where he a second time Inserts the If you have a reasonable majority Mr in his state ment says that Mr asked him why he changed this letter and thereby hangs another story the trial will probably disclose The counsel- for the defence Mr Johnston said on Monday We are producing everything- We have nothing that we want to- hold back Some people have an idea that there is a great mass of cabal istic correspondence between the members of the Cabinet and other persons There Is no such thing Again Mr Johnston does not think seriously the complaint of certain Tory papers that Mr is ham pered by the receipt that has tobe given to Col Clarke In return for cash to bring and pay witnesses The receipt concludes in these words It being agreed and understood that fees shall only be allowed for such witnesses as the Judges acting on the Commission in the above mat ter certify as having been properly subpoenaed or summoned to give evidence before the said Commission Mr Johnstonadded I will have to sign the same- kind of receipt and may say toe other side is ahead of Die for I have not yet received any money No unprejudiced per son tfea taken to prevent public funds being squander ed was an undue one ami had this precaution not been taken the Op position would have kicked when the bills came to
