Joe Foster and Jim Graham had a sort of triangular deal last week in which Miller rode off in triumph for the pos sessor of Grahams driver The con sideration was way up in the hun dreds Such a thunderous cannonading has been going on here lately one might easily imagine it the seigc of Pre toria It was simply Nathan Thomas and Andy Miller blowing up stone for Heines new residence Now Spring has come Cliff is everlastingly hustling He wants to get under his own vine and fig tree One of our citizens has a supreme contempt for the Inland Revenue De partment For some years he has been under Some time ago a young man gave me some facts concerning young lady which he very much il to see in print To make more presentable I give it in rhyme after the ball ho met me Neath the dim lights in the hall Sweet words aid honeyed phrases From his classic lips did fall His arm stole gently around my waist Which filled my soul with bliss And then to cap the climax The rascal stole a kiss Last protest that such treat ment is shamelessly unjust they are scowled upon by a community as stepping out of their proper sphere The women great sufferers in lowise in terfere with the high claim of these socalled lords It is their privi lege alone to drink smoke and swear but in their estimation the women must be free from alt these bad hab itsin short pure as the driven snow These are the broadminded men sic No narrowness fanati cism or bigotry here no The Treating Habit Every civilized nation recognizes the harm that is being done by in temperance and many are the theories and experiments looking toward the lessening of the great evil While It is generally admitted that Prohibi tion of the traffic ultimately be the cure few are found who have the courage to grasp weapon boldly Experiments have been tried in differ ent countries whereby State- control is assumed as a means of lessening the dangers that must surround the traffic wherever and in whatever form it exists countries have tried this remedy in a more or less modified degree Russia Switzerland Scandinavia and South Carolina Of these the systems adopted by Russia and Switzerland have not gone far enough to be of much bene fit but in these countries the evil habit had not gained such a foothold as in others In South Carolina the Dispensary System has proved of great benefit but eveii It does not go far enough Instead of the barrooms they have State Dispensaries to which every beverage containing alcohol is re stricted and in these drink can only be obtained in bottles While this system has its drawbacks by it the treating evil is reduced to a minimum and in this treating habit lies ninety per cent of the temptation to drink In there were in that State bars in the bars had appeared and in their place were dispensaries By this change also the hours of sale were shortened pure liquor furnished and the credit sys tem for drink abolished The weak ness in this system is that there is still the element of gain to the seller for his salary is based on a commis sion and so there is still an incentive to try and increase the sales legally or otherwise The system which is in force in Sweden and Norway does away with this temptation all ate profit being taken away and sate and profit vested in the Government J The Season is t and we are prepared with full stock CARPETS ART MUSLIMS OIL AND Orders for all kinds of printing promptly attend ed to Mr the Lake Shore has passed the one hundredth year milestone The H Cook investigation has demonstrated one thing viz the ne cessity for the abolition of that use less body When men get old or dis credited by the people they are put into the Senate an irresponsible con clave to thwart the Legislation of peoples representatives A brother of Mrs is visiting here at present Mr teacher Base Line school intends spending a few days in the city week Mr suit against the Motor Co for damages for unsatisfactory fulfilment of a contract for an engine for his yacht was after seven days delay in the city settled out of Court the Company agreeing to furnish a new engine and pay him Each party to pay their own expenses Mr Frank Daley has received sever al letters from his son who is quite satisfied with his experience so far and is now on the ocean sailing to South Africa Miss Nellie Harrison who has been with her aunt Mrs Dr Noble during the winter returned home last Tuesday There is a class of professional christian wiseacres who deem it their duty to ever and anon point the finger of scorn at Mrs Carrie Nation in her crusade against the unlawful and deathdealing liquor traffic but these same Individuals who presume to call themselves men have nothing to say about the and defyers of the law who are the real Instigators of the whole trouble in connection with the degrading business These self- styled lords of creation claim it to be their exclusive right law or no law to resort to the whiskey shebeen get intoxicated jabber and fight and by some means get conveyed home beat their wives and abuse their fam ilies or if too far gone for that He on the floor like a log until next morning Women must patiently submit to all these abuses and indig nities without a of complaint As all popularattractions arc added to the saloon in the hope of decoying the unwary and getting deeper in the net those already attracted to in crease the sales and the consequent wealth of the seller this object is re moved by State control and the temptation lessened to the consumer The hours of sale are shortened and the age limit of minors raised to years Sales on credit another catch for the unwary are done away with and gambling in or near places of sale prohibited The profits in stead of enriching the saloonkeeper go to the establishment of elevating agencies Norway and Sweden from being the most drunken countries in Europe are now the most sober While the saloonkeeper can make present immense profits out of his safes just so long will the traffic ex ercise an evil influence on the govern ment of any country for money is needed to carry elections and party or parties care little whence that money comes so long as it aids them in the scramble for power Do away with these huge profits and our gov ernments can afford to be pure again Now wherein lies the great tempta tion to drink Is it not in the sys tem of social drinking treating system How many boys and young men would take the first glass or be found in these places of resort were it not for the comradeship the treat Even among the moder ate drinkers how many a one would go home sober to his family were It not for this miserable foolish of standing treat and each one present must respond In turn until all barriers are swept away Do away with the treating habit and Prohibition is an assured thing Do away with treating and the bar keepers occupation Is gone Do away with treating and three- fourths of the hotelKeepers will go out business There is not a word to be said in favor of the habit- What mockery to say a man is in honor bound to re turn the treat Where is the honor in the one who can perhaps afford to treat all hands putting this obstacle In the way of those with whom perhaps he has not one feeling in common whom probably he has never seen before and is never likely to see again with whom he would on no account drink or associate in his own home or theirs and yet the treat must go around though it takes the food out of the mouth the children at home and the needed clothing or shoes to pay for it Honor and Duty say
