Lang's Red victorious but kids the big winners at celebrity game Kara Lang provided the storybook ending at the Oakville Soccer Club's 40th anniversary celebrity game last Thursday at Bronte Athletic Field. The OSC product and former national women's team star scored the winning goal in penalty kicks, lifting the Red Team to a 5-4 victory over the White Team. Lang, who scored 34 goals in 89 career appearances with the Canadian team before retiring last year due to injuries, also scored during regulation time for the Red Team. Rohan Ricketts, Michael Vonella and Diego Maradona also tallied for the Red Team, with Ben Rycroft (two), Clare Rustad and former OSC technical director Jason de Vos replying for the White Team. Keepers Mike Vanderjagt, Kate McKenna and Daniel Squizzato made sure the score wasn't any higher with solid play throughout the contest. Vanderjagt was named player of the game for the White Team, with McKenna earning similar honours for the Red Team. Michael (Pinball) Clemons, Damon Allen, Michele Houchen, Scott Laughton and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn were some of the other notable participants in the celebrity game, which raised money for the OSC's Fee Assistance Program. That program aims to provide each child in Oakville with an equal opportunity to enjoy the game of soccer. Prior to the game, Flynn presented Lang with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal to recognize her outstanding commitment to her community and her country. Caitlin Bell of Canada's Got Talent sang the national anthem. Hero Burgers, Coca-Cola, Umbro, the Town of Oakville and Oakville Transit were the main sponsors of the event. 25 · Thursday, July 12, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com CELEBRITY STATUS: Kara Lang (above) talks to Issiah Allen prior to the Oakville Soccer Club celebrity game last Thursday at Bronte Athletic Field. ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER First-round bye for Titans rests on appeal of forfeit ruling Continued from page 24 our innocence, rather than the onus being on them," added Briscoe, saying the complaint came from Major Series Lacrosse itself, not one of its member clubs. "(The player) played with us all season and is still with us. They were trying to say that for one game, the right paperwork or permission hadn't been given, that it was received afterwards. We know that wasn't the case. I'm fairly confident we should be getting the firstround bye." The Beaver's attempt to reach Major Series Lacrosse commissioner Jim Brady by telephone for comment Monday afternoon was unsuccessful. Regardless of the outcome of the appeal, the dispute takes the attention away from what has been a fine turnaround season for the Titans franchise. Coming off a 4-12 season last year in Elora (though Briscoe points out two of those wins came by forfeits, meaning the club was in reality 2-14), 11 wins (or 10) is a marked improvement. "We have as good a chance as anybody of winning Ontario," Briscoe said. "Our goal coming into the season was to have a much improved record, get the playoff bye and make it to the Ontario final. Now that we're going into the playoffs, we're looking further." Should the Titans lose their appeal tonight, they'll likely open their best-of-three series with Brooklin this weekend. "We know exactly what to expect from them. It's a team we've played many times over the years," Briscoe said. NOTES: The Titans' Shane Scott had two goals and four assists in Friday's regular-season finale against the Merchants to lock up the league scoring title. Scott finished the season with 71 points in 14 games, two points ahead of second-place Dylan Llord of St. Catharines... Nicholas Grasby also had a big night Friday, striking for a goal and six assists to lead the Titans. Cam Monroe and Stu Gordon each scored twice, while Miller Rusbridge, Jeff Shel, Kyle Andrews, Simon Desousa, Mark White and Ken Coulson also tallied for Oakville... If the Titans win their appeal, they would fin- ish tied with St. Catharines in points but lose the tiebreaker (head-to-head record) and drop to second place. If Oakville loses its appeal and finishes 10-6, it would be tied with Norwood for third but lose the tiebreaker (goal differential) and fall to fourth.
