www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, June 22, 2012 · 20 Halton Women's Place appeals to board on budget cuts Continued from page 16 school year, the board received various grants for its equity and inclusive education programing, so it spent $349,000 of its own funding on the portfolio. This coming school year, due to a loss in grants, and with the addition of a full-time Equity Inclusion instructional program leader (IPL) and a $100,000 budget allocation for inclusive education support, the board will be spending $549,000, despite having one fewer staff member. Euale added the role of the IPL would be to integrate the seven equity lenses (gender, faith, race/culture, socio-economic, ability, sexual orientation/gender identity, First Nations/Metis/Inuit) across the curriculum as well as support schools with engaging instructional strategies. Student trustee Jason Earl said the previous two positions had flexibility to go out to the schools and directly communicate with students, saying the GSA coordinator was at his school on a bi-weekly basis. He asked if the board was reducing its support to these two groups. However, Euale said the board is going after a more direct approach for its equity "I'm confident we have as much support as we did in the previous budget." David Euale, director of education Halton District School Board strategy, which begins at the classroom level with the teachers. "I'm confident we have as much support as we did in the previous budget," he said. Several trustees questioned whether the $100,000 should be used for an additional staff position. Board staff said the money would be used solely for equity and inclusion support. In the end, trustees voted down any attempt to shift the cash into a personnel position. "It's important we keep the flexibility for staff to use the cash," said Oakville trustee Ann Harvey Hope, adding it may be more effective as it will allow staff to use the funding in spurts throughout the year rather than to spend it on one position. In the end, trustees approved the budget unchanged from its draft form.
