Council voted to approve a scaled-down version of the pilot project, brought forward by Ward 6 Councillor Max Khan and Ward 2 Councillor Pam Damoff during Monday's council meeting. The project, which will run from July 2-Sept. 24, will gather data to see if this type of free-day transit program for seniors makes sense in the long term. Oakville Transit Director Barry Cole has settled on Monday as the day seniors will ride free. Khan argued the project, initially intended to last six months, is something many seniors need and are entitled to. "One third of our seniors are living on the brink of poverty. This is a gender and equality issue. Female seniors are twice as likely to deal with poverty than their male counterparts. Race also plays an issue; 65 per cent of visible minorities who are also seniors are considered to be low income," said Khan. "Most seniors are living on a fixed income and are struggling with the real cost of living. This motion is about allowing seniors one day a week to take the transit for free... It will be a six-month pilot project, it will end Dec. 31, 2012. At that time, we will gather all of our evidence, all the data, all the stats, all the expenses, all the ridership numbers, we will compile them and evaluate them and then we will give it to the budget committee and we'll say, `Look at this. Khan said this program is not a handout, See Three page 12 St. Dom's unveils memorial plaques By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Canada's Minister of National Defence Peter MacKay joined the students of St. Dominic Catholic School, Friday, in unveiling memorial plaques to two of Canada's fallen soldiers. The plaques, which commemorate Colonel Geoff Parker of Oakville and Trooper Marc Diab of Mississauga, were unveiled at the base of trees in the Bronte Veterans Garden, during a special ceremony in Donovan Bailey Park. The Bronte Veterans Garden was created after St. Dominic students went to the Town and said more was needed to honour Canadian soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. During his speech, MacKay praised the creation of the garden and other acts of kindness undertaken by the students for Canada's soldiers.
