OUT OF MY WAY: Oakville Longhorns quarterback Martin Belle (1) tries to avoid the tackle of Sarnia Imperials defender Steve Mati during Saturday's Northern Football Conference contest at Bronte Athletic Field. Belle threw a touchdown pass and ran for another major, helping the Longhorns down Sarnia 34-13 and earn their first win in nearly two full years. MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @HALTON_PHOTO Buzz locks up fourth in East, home-floor versus Newmarket The Oakville Buzz will enjoy home-floor advantage when it faces the Newmarket Saints in the opening round of the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B playoffs. Regardless of the result of last night's (Tuesday's) game in Georgetown, the Buzz was guaranteed a fourth-place finish in the East Conference standings. Oakville carried a 13-5-1 record into its regular-season finale with the Halton Hills Bulldogs. A top-four finish in each conference earns teams home-floor advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Oakville will meet fifth-place Newmarket, which was 11-8 going into last night's home game against the Mimico Mountaineers. Any designs the Buzz had on overtaking Halton Hills for top spot in the South East Division, and earning a more favourable first-round matchup, ended Friday with a 9-7 loss to the Bulldogs at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Mike Beirgard and Todd Nakasuji scored twice each in the loss for the Buzz, which saw its seven-game winning streak snapped. Ryan Callaghan, Keyan McQueen and Robert Bentivegna had Oakville's other markers. The Buzz bounced back the following evening with a 13-9 win over the Mountaineers in Mimico. McQueen had three goals and four assists as Oakville opened the third period with six consecutive goals, erasing an 8-7 deficit through 40 minutes. Sam Neeb, Beirgard and Nakasuji added a pair each and Colton Watkinson, Chris Young, Bryan Campbell and Callaghan also tallied in support of winning netminder Ian Duffy. The Buzz and Saints met twice during the regular season, with Oakville winning both by narrow margins. The Buzz downed Newmarket 11-10 May 3 in Oakville and edged the Saints 10-8 June 8 in Newmarket. The series will begin Sunday at Glen Abbey with a 7 p.m. start for Game 1, then shift to Newmarket for Game 2. 27 · Wednesday, June 20, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Longhorns earn elusive victory The Oakville Longhorns logo may depict a steer, but it was a different animal that was on the mind of coach Brian Copeland. And that's no bull. After outplaying their first two opponents of the season but not being rewarded with a victory, the Longhorns finally broke into the win column Saturday with a 34-13 triumph over the Sarnia Imperials at Bronte Athletic Field. The win was also Oakville's first in Northern Football Conference (NFC) play in nearly two calendar years, allowing Copeland -- who played for the team during last season's 0-9 campaign -- to finally breathe a sigh of relief. "My Facebook status the other day said something along the lines of `Hey monkey, get off my back', or `Thank you for getting off my back'," said Copeland. "It was a gratifying win. We've worked so hard for the last two months." The Longhorns (1-2) were led Saturday by two-way star Jared Manchulenko, who achieved the statistical rarity of scoring both the shortest and longest possible touchdowns in the same game. The receiver/defensive end recovered an Oakville fumble in the Sarnia end zone for a major in the third quarter, then returned a fumble for a NFC-record 109 yards and a touchdown in the fourth. "He's an incredible, incredible talent," Copeland said of Manchulenko, who tried out for the Calgary Stampeders last season. "Those were two ways I would not expect him to score. When I send him on the field, I expect him to cover a receiver and maybe intercept a ball for a touchdown or offensively catch a ball downfield and beat somebody. Those (scores) were examples where his brains took over his athletic ability." Robin Medeiros added another return touchdown for Oakville, running back a punt for 47 yards. The Longhorns' other scores came on a 37-yard pass from Martin Belle to Medeiros and a one-yard run by Belle. Sergio Giusti kicked four converts to account for Oakville's other points. Oakville outgained its opposition for the third straight game, racking up 213 yards on the ground -- 113 of them from Jermain DeCosta -- and 303 overall. The Longhorns' defence limited Sarnia to 198 total yards, recovered a fumble and was led in tackles by Jason Acton's 9.5. The Longhorns' next game will be June 30 at Bronte Athletic Field, a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Toronto Titans. -- Jon Kuiperij Senior B Titans win third straight Shane Scott had three goals and four assists to lead the Oakville Titans senior B lacrosse team to its third straight win, 13-11 over the St. Catharines Saints Saturday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Mark White and Dan Hamlett also had had tricks for the Titans (7-4), with Mike Gillan, Cam Monroe, Stu Gordon and Kyle Aquin also finding the net. Scot Robinson recorded the victory in goal. Oakville is scheduled to host the Norwood Champs Friday, but the venue has yet to be determined.
