www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 6, 2012 · 26 OFSAA soccer to include food drive Buzz shows no mercy in weekend routs of Orillia Continued from page 25 It might be a good thing that the Oakville Buzz and Orillia Kings aren't scheduled to face each other again this season. Orillia tempers were running a bit short this weekend after the Buzz ran the Kings over in a pair of Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B contests, including a 28-8 blitzing Friday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Friday's contest, which Oakville led 12-0 after one period and 15-0 early in the second period, featured eight fighting majors. Orillia was whistled for 102 penalty minutes on the night, apparently not amused by the Oakville onslaught. Robert Bentivegna enjoyed a 10-point outing with six goals and four helpers, while Greg Campbell also scored six times and added two assists. Todd Nakasuji (four goals, five assists), Mike Beirgard (one goal, four assists), Spencer Gallant (two goals, three assists), Eddie Renaud (three goals, one assist) and Ryan Callaghan (one goal, three assists) were other offensive standouts. Elliott Cowburn, Ryan Cavanagh, Jake Jagodkin, Keyan McQueen and Bryan Campbell rounded out the scoring for the Buzz, with Ian Duffy recording the win in net and D.J. Eckert tending goal for the final half of the game. The 28 goals set a Buzz record for most goals in one game, though it wasn't close to the league record. Akwesasne pounded Nepean 30-4 last week, and Clarington embarrassed Huntsville 33-2 two seasons ago in the league's two most-recent 30-plus goal contests. Bad blood from Friday's game seemed to spill over into Sunday, with Oakville's Joel MacBride and the Kings' James Lee dropping the gloves just seven seconds into the match in Orillia. Five more fighting majors were later assessed during the contest as Orillia racked up 70 more penalty minutes. Sam Neeb had four goals and two assists to lead the Buzz to a 13-6 win over the Kings. Beirgard and Callaghan both had three goals and two helpers, Nakasuji chipped in a goal and five assists, and McQueen had a goal and four assists. Campbell also tallied in support of Duffy. The Buzz (9-4-1) will travel to Newmarket Friday to visit the Saints, then return home Saturday to clash with the Markham Ironheads (a 7 p.m. start at Glen Abbey). the tournament is a food fundraiser for the community, asking athletes and coaches to bring three canned goods to the Oakville Soccer Club. The goal is to collect more than over 1,000 canned goods in order to support Food for Life Canada. "We feel like this is special, something in order to give back to the community. Being a Catholic school, we thought it was important to do for hungry people living in Halton Region," Bonfiglio said. Although it's not mandatory, all spectators are encouraged to also donate canned goods to the drive. Trinity will play its first two games tomorrow, at 9 a.m. against Southern Ontario Secondary School Association champion Denis Morris, and then at 1 p.m. against the Toronto District Catholic Athletic Association's Bishop Allen. Friday, the Titans conclude the round robin with a contest against South Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association finalist Ursuline College. Quarter-finals will be played Friday afternoon, with semis and medal games slated for Saturday. Trinity boys denied OFSAA trip Trinity's boys won't be competing in the OFSAA soccer championships, however, after losing the GHAC final 3-1 to St. Thomas More Thursday in Hamilton. The Titans opened the scoring on a penalty kick by Karlo Bobinac, but the Knights responded with three unanswered markers -- the final one coming with five minutes remaining and Trinity pressing up the field in search of the equalizer. Three red cards and the ejection of Titans head coach Andrew Saulez didn't exactly help Trinity's cause either, though Saulez said Trinity's discipline wasn't necessarily as big an issue as it appeared to be. All three red cards assessed to Trinity players were the result of double yellows. "To me, it didn't have to go that way," said the coach, who was tossed early in the second half -- when the game was tied 1-1 -- after protesting the first disqualification. "Obviously I wish I'd kept my mouth quiet, but I have to stick up for my guys a little bit. All I was asking was for (the ref) to be aware when someone already had a yellow card. I think you have to do something really bad to be out of the game, that's all I was saying, and I felt bad for the kid." St. Thomas More coach Dino Perri agreed with his counterpart. "I think (the Titans) were a little hard done by, in all fairness," Perri said. "Their coach could have got away with a warning. I thought it was a little harsh." The Titans tasted defeat just once in 10 Halton league games this season, including a shootout victory over Bishop Reding in the regional championship game. St. Thomas More is seeded fifth at OFSAA. -- With files from Jon Kuiperij and Larry Moko, Metroland West Media Group Join us for the OSC 40th Anniversary Celebrity Soccer Game!
