August 2, 1944 PTE. BEIGHTON IS REPORTED AS MISSING
Wife Resides at 71 St. Paul St. — Saw Husband Embarking on Invasion in Newsreel at Local Theatre.
Word has been received by Mrs. W. J. Beighton, 71 St. Paul St., that her husband, Pte. W. J. Beighton, is officially listed as missing in action as of July 8.
Joining the 45th Battery in Lindsay on September 5, 1939, Pte. Beighton went overseas with his unit in April, 1941, crossing the Channel in the "D" day invasion with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, to whom he had been transferred.
Recently witnessing some invasion pictures at a local theatre, Mrs. Beighton had the thrill of clearly seeing her husband embarking for the crossing.
Despite the fact that Pte. Beighton is officially listed as missing from July 8, Mrs. Beighton has just received a letter written by him on July 12 and posted on July 13 in France, giving rise to the hope that he has been separated from his unit and is probably safe and sound.
In addition to his wife, two children, Billy, aged 8, and Beverley, aged 3, reside at 71 St. Paul.
August 9, 1944 Mrs. Beighton Hears Husband Reported Missing in Error
Friends of Mrs, W. J. Beighton 71 St. Paul St. town will be pleased to know that her husband who was reported missing in action on July 8 is now officially reported safe. The telegram she received this morning read as follows,—
The Minister of National Defence is pleased to inform you that Pte. Wm. John Beighton previously reported missing in action is now officially reported safe.
Regret anxiety caused.
It will be remembered that Mrs. Beighton had received notice that her husband was missing on July 8, despite the fact that she had received a letter from him which was written on July 12 and post-marked July 13.
Mrs. Beighton was much relieved with the receipt of this official word although she had never really been dismayed in view of the fact that the official notice and her husband's letter just didn't coincide.
Nevertheless she reported an anxious time until it was cleared up.- Media Type

- This card is part of a larger collection of World War II personnel clippings. The project began in 1944 at the Lindsay Library. The intent was to gather together as much information as possible on the military record and the service of people from the Town of Lindsay and the County of Victoria (now Kawartha Lakes)who served in the war. To that end, during the years 1944, 1945, and 1946, members of the public donated photographs and updated information about their loved ones. Both library staff and the public saved and donated newspaper clippings. Some of the files contain great amounts of detail, while others have just a name.
