Vol. 50 No. 64 "Using Communication To Build Better Communities" Fundraising 80 per cent complete for hospital By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The new Oakville hospital's $60-million fundraising goal to equip the facility has reached 80 per cent of its target, announced the Oakville Hospital Foundation (OHF) Monday. The news came during a ceremony at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Heritage Centre before approximately 200 guests, all of whom contributed to the $48 million raised to date. "I still remember the foundation board meeting -- I've forgotten how many years ago it was -- when this John Oliver audacious goal of $60 million was put in front of them and the jaws dropping and exclamations of doubt around the table," said John Oliver, president and CEO of Halton Healthcare Services (HHS). "I think tonight is going to be living proof of just how a group of great, determined, skilled people can make miracles happen." Oliver said HHS has been working on developing the new hospital for about 10 years and now it is finally becoming a physical reality. "It's no longer a concept. The pilot walked away without injury after the small-prop plane's engine failed. Pilot walks away without injuries A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in a field Saturday morning, after experiencing engine failure. At approximately 9:19 a.m., Halton Regional Police received a call that a plane landed in a field located in the area of Dundas Street West and Colonel William Parkway in west Oakville. The plane's engine had failed, forcing its pilot to land in the field. Two cyclists were biking past the field, when they watched the plane go down. They immediately called 9-1-1. The plane was described as a small prop plane. The pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft and he was not injured. The cause of the engine failure is unknown. There was some damage to the front of the aircraft. Nav Canada, Canada's civil air navigation service, was contacted, but there will be no further investigation. Halton police are not conducting an investigation.
