Ability to reload is OT's legacy Continued from page 36 Dynastic Devils Abbey Park's victory over Oakville Trafalgar in Wednesday's Halton Tier 1 nal interrupted a dominant run by the Red Devils' senior boys rugby program. YEAR RESULT, OPPONENT Eagles' core graduating this year Continued from page 36 37 · Friday, May 25, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com the Eagles' Jamie Leveridge said revenge wasn't the prevailing emotion. "OT is a great team, and they have never been filthy about it," said Leveridge, selected as Abbey Park's man of the match Wednesday. "They have just always been a team that is a step ahead of their competition." Eagles co-coach Tyler Leggatt, the most responsible for Abbey Park's ascent in senior boys' rugby, knows his team's stay at the top might be a short one. This year's Eagles squad is a veteran-laden one, featuring a couple fifth-year students and a couple provincial teamers. Things might be a lot different next year, particularly with OT returning most of its starting cast and loaded for bear. And that, again, is another credit to the Red Devils' rugby dominance over the years. Many high-calibre players have come and gone at OT, but the Devils always managed to reload. "We have a ton graduating, especially our big stars," Leggatt said. "To lose them, that means it's a big shift going out. But OT is the example. They have had those kinds of players on their team turn over (in the past), and we just have to look to rebuild next year." -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports 2005* 45-5 win over Notre Dame 2006 52-0 win over TA Blakelock 2007 41-15 win over Notre Dame 2008 43-5 win over TA Blakelock 2009 31-17 win over Abbey Park 2010 27-8 win over Abbey Park 2011 19-5 win over Abbey Park 2012 32-10 loss to Abbey Park * Devils won previous four Halton nals as well GHAC track and field The Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference/Halton track and field championships were held Wednesday in Hamilton. Schaffler went on to praise the competitive edge displayed by Abbey Park. "Full credit to Abbey Park. They've been trying for years to get their program going. It's nice for them to get the reward and see it pays off," Schaffler said. Since taking over the Eagles' rugby program several years ago, Leggatt quickly managed to build a team that has proven it can compete with anyone. Next year, the Eagles are subject to losing a few key players as they prepare to graduate this summer, but Leggatt said that following the philosophy of a team like Oakville Trafalgar is the key to keeping them competitive for the future. "We have a ton graduating, especially our big stars. We are very fortunate to have had some extremely talented rugby players who have represented Canada and the provincials, so to lose them, that means it's a big shift going out," Leggatt said. "But OT is the prime example. They have had those kind of players on their team turn over, and we just have to look to rebuild next year." Leveridge is one of those in his final year for the Eagles. A player who was around last season when the Devils owned the Eagles, defeating them three times, Leveridge said that he was overwhelmed with excitement after finally overcoming a team like OT. "It's incredible. It's the goal that every team in the Halton region moves towards, and the question was always what are we going to do against OT to beat them," he said. Although the game got heated at times, especially near the end, Leveridge said his team has nothing but respect for a team that has been so successful for such a long time. "OT is a great team, and they have never been filthy about it. They have just always been a team that is a step ahead of their competition," Leveridge said. "We finally have an amazing team here." -- The Eagles will host Hamilton Catholic finalist St. Jean de Brebeuf Monday in a Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference qualifying contest. The winner of that game will earn a berth in this year's OFSAA quad-A tournament, which will be held in Hamilton. A start time for Monday's game had yet to be announced at press time.
