the issue of the Newmarket Express of July there ap- an editorial article accusing the Commissioner of Crown Lands and the officers of his Department with delib erately misrepresenting the character of the new lands now being settled and deceiving the settlers who by reason of such misrepresentations in cur heavy losses in transporting them selves to lands that prove to be for settlement While a charge of this kind made an Ontario paper would be damaging to the cause of Colonization even if untrue should it come under the eyes of foreigners it will readily be seen that a mere assertion of this kind un supported by facts would not be credited at home Accordingly the editor of the Express gave what purposed to be a concrete case of mis representation on the part of de partment of Crown Lands thru which Dr Pringle of Sutton and other resi dents of the County of York were led to purchase lands from the Govern ment in the Slate River valley that were- not as represented but that tin Oar Toronto Letter A painful fatality occurred at the Island on Saturday Mr Sidney Greene barrister wellknown in social circles bathing and an expert swimmer was seen by rela tives suddenly to drop his head when within sixty feet from shore and sink out- of sight The body was soon re covered but life was extinct A med ical examination revealed the fact that death was due to heart failure On the Department as stated If the facts went as stated- in your article and as were doubtless given you by four there be some justification for your charge officers of the Crown Lands Department deliberately misre present the character of the land open for settlement injudicious the in terest of the country tho it might be but the present attack on the Depart ment of Crown Lands is so unjust that I rely on your of fairness and your interest in our fair Province to rectify the mistake made We are making an honest to populate our undeveloped agricultural Surgeoii who lands and an attack in the house of our friends like this particularly of the Red Cross when altogether unwarranted is to do the work of colonizing W the seat of war- harm I a very That we have large areas of rich agricultural lands awaiting the axe and plow of the settler is admit ted by every Canadian who has taken the trouble to investigate actual condi tions in the Province in the Slate River valley and elsewhere the settler Is given land entirely free of charge the only condition being that he will live upon it and cultivate it As is generally known all the land in On tario is or has been tree covered in some sections forest fires have been so severe as to remove all the timber over small areas but this is very un usual and in advising land seekers am very careful to tell them that the labor of clearing the laud for cultiva tion is not light My instructions from the Commissioner of Crown Lands are very strict in this regard and I endeavour to carry them out to the best of my ability I must apologize for the length of this letter but the importance of cor recting so serious a charge as that the Bureau of Colonization deliberately misrepresents the character of the land oBered to settlers must be my excuse and I trust- you will give it the same prominence in your paper as the very misleading article it refers to I re main Yours very truly Director of Colonization and Forestrv Telephone Death of Kennedy The somewhat sudden death of Mr Kennedy on Monday afternoon cast a gloom oyer the Town as he was a wellknown and highly respect ed business man Deceased was afflicted with disease but it was not suspected that the end was so near He had been feeling poorly for a couple of weeks but was around as usual till Friday night when he commenced bleeding at the nose This left quiries as to the correctness of the statements made by your informant In your article you charge that the claims made on behalf of what is call ed New Ontario as a field for ag ricultural settlement
