But while visitors are sampling and feasting on the various fine dining options, they will also be bringing hope to those who are less fortunate by helping to put a roof over a person's head. This year's Oakville Taste, taking place on Sunday, May 27 at Appleby College, is supporting Home Suite Hope (HSH), a homelessness initiative that provides living accommodation and support for people faced with dire needs. "This (Oakville Taste) really gives people a sense of how Oakville is a great community," said Jules Graham-Hood, HSH director of development. "This is an event that's giving back." Last year, Oakville Taste raised $15,000 for Kerr Street Ministries. Oakville Taste event co-ordinator Dave Higgins said he hopes the event will raise a similar amount this year. Higgins said HSH was chosen because it is local and it has similar financial constraints as other charities. Home Suite Hope is helping to organize the event, by doing such work as seeking O R T H O T I C S , sponsors and auction items and providing volunteers. Being involved helps HSH show its gratitude, Graham-Hood said, while it reduces the workload for the organizers of f Oakville Taste. While funding will be directed to Home Suite Hope through the proceeds of the event, Graham-Hood said it does much more for the organization. "This provides us an opportunity to further educate people on who we are and the impact that we make. People don't know it's happening because it's kept very quiet for confidentiality and it's a very tough time for a family," she said. "This helps us with funding but the awareness is huge for us. People will learn how they can help, how they can get involved because every little bit counts." The money will be directed towards HSH programming for families, such as providing rent subsidies. Graham-Hood wants people to understand that helping someone pay rent & P E D O R T H I C C A R E is more than just putting a roof over his or her head. It reduces the overall load for the family so it can buy things such as food. "People don't realize when they are stricken with poverty and they're homeless, that's everything," she said. "You don't have money for transportation, let alone to go to the movies, or go to camp, or to take music lessons, or skating or swimming lessons." Graham-Hood encourages everyone to come out to the event. "Come and enjoy an incredible experience that shows how wonderful Oakville is as a community," she said. Higgins also invites people to come out to Oakville Taste for its dining experience. "People will get to experience good food and beverage from local companies," he said. "The food and drink is very good." The event takes place on the grounds of the school, located at 540 Lakeshore Rd. W. It runs from 3-7 p.m. Tickets cost $85 per person or $150 for two. Discounts for groups of 10 are available. For more information, ticket locations or sponsorship or auction item options, visit www.oakvilletaste.com. F O O T W E A R Experience the comfort.
