Oakville actor/singer/Disneystar Jasmine Richards is working to improve mental health services for youths one song at a time. The Iroquois Ridge High School graduate recently released the song and music video titled You Have The Power. Now she's challenging all Canadians with what she calls May Day Download. On Monday, May 7, the Naturally, Sadie sitcom star hopes people will log on to iTunes and download the song. All proceeds of the song sale from that day will go towards the Ottawa Youth Services Mental Health Aid. The organization was selected through a request by the family of Jamie Hubley, who was the inspiration for the song and the music video, filmed at Iroquois Ridge. Hubley was a gay Ottawa teen who committed suicide as a result of being bullied. Since then, his father, Ottawa city councilor Allan Hubley, has been lobbying the Provincial government to pass new anti-bullying bills. Richards hopes to raise $100,000 for the Ottawa organization during the one-day download challenge. Richards began her acting career at a young age, but said the fame has brought her some negative attention, such as bullying, in elementary and secondary school. The song is being used to raise funds and awareness for mental health services. "I eventually refused to talk about myself, or anything that I was doing," she said in a press release. "Even now at 21, I barely speak about what I am doing unless people ask. It has affected who I am as a person and changed how I do things." Ladies' chorus joins barbershoppers By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Women singing at a barbershop concert? Certainly. When Oakville's The Entertainers barbershop chorus takes to the stage for a pair of concerts tomorrow, it will be joined by the Circle of Harmony women's chorus. "This is the first time we've had a ladies chorus, primarily a cappella, same as us. It's an experiment," said Jack Smye, a spokesperson for The Entertainers. The concerts, titled Hey! Look Us Over, named after one of the songs in the show, will take place at Holy Trinity High School. "We're at Holy Trinity and that's a wonderful facility. This one's got real-theatre seats, a stage with lighting. We'll be able to do things we haven't been able to do before," Smye said. Just one of those things the barbershoppers have not been able to do is do more than just put on a musical concert. At this concert, magician Mark Baluk will emcee the event. Along with his duties as emcee, Baluk will put on a show of his own, with illusions and slight-of-hand tricks. The concert will also feature several of The Entertainers quartets as well as a quartet of the Circle of Harmony. The quartets and choruses will sing separately, and the show will end with two combined numbers. The women's chorus is comprised of 70 voices, which Smye said is a joy to watch. "They're much more animated than us. They do a lot of movement in all their shows. The men? I don't know if we're not capable of doing it," he said with a laugh. The Entertainers features a 40-voice chorus. The group puts on two chorus concerts per year, along with performances throughout the year at civic events, fundraisers, seniors residences by its quartets or the chorus. Smye encourages anyone to come out to the concert. "This is going to be very enjoyable," he said. "For people who like a cappella singing, both for females and men, it will be a very enjoyable and uplifting experience." The school is located at 2420 Sixth Line. The concerts start at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for general admission or $15 for children and students. Tickets are available by calling 905-336-5195.
