Weekend at Camp Enterprise teaches students about marketing By Raffi Sattar Grade 11, MacLachlan College & Michael Kang Grade 11, Abbey Park H.S. "If you win the day, you win the week. If you win the week, you win the month. If you win the month, you'll win the year. And if you win the year, you'll win your life." t's not easy to bring a group of teenagers to the edge of their seats, but with these words (mentioned above), Sunny Daljit did just that. Sunny was just one of the presenters at the 16th annual Camp Enterprise. Hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Burlington and Oakville, the weekend-long retreat welcomes the brightest students from across the two cities to learn from the very best of Canada's business community. "I really wasn't sure what the camp was going to be like," said Kristopher Klinck, a junior at Lester B. Pearson High School. As we headed to the venue after school on April 19, we were unaware of the tremendous impact that the camp was about to make on our lives. The line-up of personalities speaking at the camp was vibrant and passionate. On our first night, magician Rick Rossini spoke about the realm where business and magic meet: marketing. He explained the importance of wowing your audiences as part of effective marketing. Dalia Asterbadi, CEO of Realsociable, and Donna Messer, networking guru at ConnectUs Canada, coached the campers on leveraging social media and networking to create rewarding work relationships. "Dalia's presentation really opened my eyes as to how useful sites like Twitter and LinkedIn could be," said Iroquois Ridge's Lara Valles. Donna spoke about how students can create opportunities for themselves by expanding their network. Her tag line "It's not what you know, but who you know," resonated deeply with the campers. We also spent time sharpening skills that are integral to the business world. An entrepreneurship project dubbed "Meet the Dragons" challenged the students to flex their creativity. We were given a short period of time to create an idea for an original product, and deliver a sales pitch to a panel of judges. One of the most touching elements of the camp is embedded in Rotary's mission statement: Service above Self. The presenters stressed the importance of giving back to the community as part of a successful career. To illustrate the concept, Robin Mednick, co-founder of the charity Pencils for Kids, spoke of his mission to create sustainable change in some of the poorest communities in Niger, West Africa, through education. Students left the camp with a host of new friends, useful contacts, a hunger for success and a respect for humanitarian work. "The camp has changed yet another person's life," said Anthony Brum, a student at St. Ignatius of Loyola, energized by his experiences over the weekend. I'm certain that as this year's Camp Enterprise alumni, we have definitely learned what it takes to win the day.
