Volunteers needed for planting By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Want to plant a tree? Try it this weekend. Oakvillegreen Conservation Association is hosting a community tree-planting tomorrow (Saturday) in town and is looking for volunteers. Volunteers will be able to help plant native trees and shrubs with Oakvillegreen's Ground Breakers committee, which has planted more than 12,000 trees and plants here since 2004. The planting will take place along the northeast side of the creek between Nightingale Way and Pleasant Lane. It runs 10 a.m. to noon. High school students will be able to earn volunteer hours and it's a fun way for families to spend time together, while making the community greener. There will be shovels and gloves provided, but people are also welcome to bring their own. Anyone interest in volunteering should contact Liz Benneian, Oakvillegreen's manager of public education and communications, at programs@oakvillegreen.org or 289-813-1568. This tree-planting event is one of several in the community this month. Today (Friday) the organization will be planting trees at Beechnut Wood Park from 1-3 p.m. On Wednesday, May 8, Oakvillegreen will be planting at Grand Oak Park at 10 a.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at the southwest corner of the park, along Grand Oak Trail. It will hold its sixth annual Community Garage and Plant Sale in the Oakville Town Hall parking lot on Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. People wanting a spot at the garage sale need to register and pay the $20 fee by May 25. After May 25, spaces will cost $25. To reserve a spot, e-mail Margaret at garagesale@247post.com. For more information, visit www.oakvillegreen.org.
