www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, April 19, 2012 · 38 Watch Leafs win the Cup Toronto Maple Leafs fans will finally have the chance to watch their beloved team hoist the Stanley Cup this spring. Sure, it won't be the modern-day version of the Leafs winning the NHL championship this season (or likely any time soon). Rather, Buds fans will gather next week at an Oakville bar to watch Toronto's Cupclinching 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 6 of the 1967 final. Local resident Brennan Carson organized the event after being encouraged by a friend to share the original CBC Sports recording he has of the last time the Leafs won the Stanley Cup. The evening will take place Thursday, April 26 at O'Finns Irish Temper (136 Church St.), with doors opening at 7 p.m. and the game beginning at 8 p.m. "It's one of those things I've always kept to myself," Carson said of the recording, which he received years ago as a birthday present from his cousin, a former CBC employee. "It's one thing just to put it on in your basement and invite four guys over to watch it. We're trying to create an experience where you're watching it in a crowd with fellow fans." The 40-year-old Carson said knowing the outcome of the game doesn't detract from the enjoyment of watching it. "I think you spend a lot of time noticing how different the game was at that time, the quality of players... and the phenomenal skating and passing," Carson said. "The outcome is secondary to enjoying the beauty of the way the game is played and really trying to feel like you were there." The evening will also include a buffet dinner, three drink tickets (one for each Leafs goal) and draws for autographed prizes signed by former Leafs greats Ron Ellis, Red Kelly and Charlie Conacher. Defenceman Larry Hillman, who was part of that 1967 Leafs team, will be in attendance. And Toronto Star sportswriter Damien Cox has donated a signed copy of his book '67 that chronicles the Leafs' last Cup win. Tickets are on sale for $100, which also includes a $40 charitable donation to Food For Life. Roughly 40 tickets remain available for the event, which Carson said will have a maxiumum capacity of around 100 people. "There's been great enthusiasm," Carson said of feedback he's received about the event. "I even have some people coming wearing their Habs jersey to create a counterpoint... Leafs fans are a bit jaded now, but we love holding onto the glory days of the past." Anyone interested in purchasing a ticket for the evening is invited to contact Brennan Carson via email at bcarson@stylusam. com. -- Jon Kuiperij PHOTO SUBMITTED next week when Toronto Maple Leafs fans gather to watch the Leafs' Stanley Cup win in 1967.
