Opening-day action KEEPAWAY: Pictured from left to right, Red Wings players Blake Thomas and Ethan Cox try to keep the ball away from Senators opponent Owen Mountjoy Saturday at River Oaks Recreation Centre. Last weekend marked the opening of the inaugural season for the Oakville Minor Ball Hockey League. MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @HALTON_PHOTOG Former Argos greats to coach Ocho Bowl The caliber of play in the Ocho Bowl might be a little bit higher this year. Former Toronto Argonauts greats Michael (Pinball) Clemons and Damon Allen will participate as celebrity coaches at next weekend's fifth annual North Oakville Touch Football Association (NOTFA) charity touch football tournament. Current Argos cornerback Jordan Younger and lineman Wayne Smith will also attend the Ocho Bowl, which will be contested Saturday at the Oakville Soccer Club's Pine Glen Indoor Soccer Centre facility on Third Line. Clemons, a longtime Oakville resident, is a natural fit to participate in the tournament. The Ocho Bowl (named in the memory of former NOTFA player Peter `Ocho' Singh) raises money for the Michael Pinball Clemons Foundation. The past four Ocho Bowls have raised a combined total of $23,000 for the charitable foundation, which has led to the building of two schools in rural Africa. The first school that was built with Ocho Bowl proceeds was named after Singh. This year's tournament will begin at 10 a.m., with championship and consolation games slated for 11 a.m. Four teams will be randomly drawn from a hat, with the winners of the first game playing for the championship and the losers playing for the consolation title. Following the game, players will have a lunch, silent auction and raffle draw at The Tin Cup on North Service Road. 37 · Thursday, April 19, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Hornets won title with overtime goal Continued from page 36 advance to the gold-medal game. But then Lester's worst fears about playing three games so close together began to come to fruition against Cambridge, especially after the Hornets surrendered the opening goal of the game. "The girls were burnt out, no question about it. We didn't know how we'd hold it together," the coach said. But, as they did before provincials began, the Hornets managed to find a spark. Paige Lester tied the game in the second period, and the teams went into overtime before Sophia Lombardo picked off a Cambridge clearing pass 1:26 into the first extra session and beat the Roadrunners goaltender. The goal set off an immediate celebration, though the Hornets coaches and parents might have actually been more PROVINCIAL CHAMPS: The Oakville atom A Hornets won the Ontario Women's Hockey Association championship last weekend by winning all six of their games, outscoring their opponents 15-2. excited about the win than the players were.
