www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, April 19, 2012 · 8 By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville still inspired to fight on Terry's Team In 2010, Darrell Atherly took his cancer diagnosis and inspired a team of his closest friends and family to take part in the Oakville Terry Fox Run -- and although the inspiration behind Team Darrell has since passed away, nearly two years later, the team is continuing to grow and instill hope in cancer fighters and survivors. That was just one of the stories told during Wednesday's Team Up for Terry Fox kickoff breakfast, held in the Atrium of Oakville's Town Hall to inspire people and encourage team participation at this year's fundraising run. Atherly was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2009, and following chemotherapy, had several surgeries to remove his bladder and prostate. When the cancer spread to his spine, seven vertebrae were fused together. Two months after Team Darrell's inaugural run, cancer took Atherly's life. "It all started as an idea, a way to do something to support a person we all loved," said Raylan, Atherly's son. "I still remember that day (of the run), my dad, tall in stature -- 6-foot-7 -- thanking everyone for the overwhelming support. It was a special day as people walked, biked or bladed with a picture of my dad pinned to their shirt. Definitely a day I'll remember for the rest of my life." During Team Darrell's first year of participat- JAMES HOGGETT / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER TERRY'S TEAM: The Oakville Terry Fox Run committee held an official kickoff breakfast in the Atrium of Oakville Town Hall. This year's event will be held on Sept. 16. Since Terry Fox's death in 1981 from osteosarcoma (bone cancer), the Terry Fox Run has grown to become the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research with more than 60 countries taking part, raising more than $500 million worldwide to help produce better treatments for many types of cancers. "Words that come to mind when we think of Terry are inspired, belief and hope," said Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff, who is also the chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run committee. "Terry was 18 when he had his leg amputated and 20 when he started his run. To think of what he accomplished at such a young age, it's nothing short of remarkable... and now, 32 years later, here we are continuing his legacy." Ward 6 Town Councillor Max Khan, a threetime cancer survivor, was also present at the kickoff to help inspire and encourage team participation in this year's run, as well as kick off the inaugural run for Team Max. "You have no idea what this does for individuals like me, not just for the Foundation, but for people struggling with cancer. It lets us know we're not alone," said Khan. "When you're in hospital receiving treatment... I just received my last chemo session about a month ago... you sometimes believe you are alone. But I look around the community and I know that's not the case. I was so touched by the support I received from the community and my fellow councillors... I'm so indebted to the way everyone stood by me. "This is the third time I've had cancer and a lot of people think I must be one of the unluckiest people battling (the disease), but I'm standing here today... because of the love and support from this community." The Oakville 2012 Terry Fox Run will take place on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W., at 10 a.m. To donate or to participate in the run, visit www.terryfox.org.
