www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 18, 2012 · 26 Several OAK swimmers reached 'A' finals at Olympic trials Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) swimmer Tera Van Beilen recently dominated the headlines by qualifying for this year's Olympics in two events, but she wasn't the only local swimmer with impressive results at the national Olympic trials. Mack Darragh, Duncan Partridge, Marni Oldershaw and Annie Harrison also reached the A final of at least one event at trials, resulting in topeight placings. Darragh was fifth in the men's 200-metre butterfly and sixth in the 200m individual medley; Partridge was sixth in the men's senior 50m freestyle; Oldershaw was sixth in the women's 200m individual medley; and Harrison came eighth in the women's 200m backstroke. Darragh added a ninth-place effort in the men's 200m breaststroke, while Oldershaw was ninth in both the women's 200m backstroke and 400m individual medley. Harrison (13th in female 400m individual medley) and Oldershaw (women's 200m breaststroke) reached the B finals in other events. Other OAK swimmers to qualify for the B finals included Mika Spencer (14th in women's 400m freestyle, 16th in 20m freestyle), Gamal Assaad (16th, men's 200m butterfly) and Danielle Carty (18th, women's 50m freestyle). OAK relay teams also broke two national age group records at trials. The team of Bryce KwiecienDelaney, Evan White, David Whiteside and Assaad set a new standard in the boys' 15-17 800m freestyle, while Mitchell Gour, Peter Serles, KwiecienDelaney and White teamed up to break the Canadian record in the 400m medley. Various OAK club records were also set at trials. Victor Davis Memorial Cup Caroline Zhang won seven gold medals to lead OAK swimmers at the Victor Davis Memorial Cup, the first long-course 50-metre meet of the season for many club members. Magie Copland (six gold) and Trevor Smith (five gold) also had strong showings for OAK, as did quadruple-gold winners Collyn Gagner, Adrian Haasler, Nina Tomic and Anaka Will-Dryden. Carly Jazbec and Omar Lozano each won three gold medals at the meet, with Taja McLean, Joel Pearson, Lucas Po and Kevin Scaife collecting two each.
