Musician Kelita sings her way back into community By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Singer-songwriter Kelita has performed numerous times in Oakville and has been a part of the entertainment scene in the GTA for years. Less than a year since she moved to British Columbia, the country/ gospel musician is still a regular performer in the area and will be performing in Oakville Friday (April 13). "Since I moved to Vancouver in September, this is my fifth time back to the GTA," the former Mississauga resident said. "It's weaning me. This to me is still home. I'm letting go piece by piece because it's a huge move to go across the country." The musician will perform at "Since I moved to Vancouver in September, this is my fifth time back to the GTA... This to me is still home. I'm letting go piece by piece." Kelita, musician Mary Mother of God Parish, a presentation put on by the Catholic Women's Leagues of Oakville. It is a free presentation and a free will offering will be accepted at the entrance. Kelita is already known in the community for her Heavenly Night concerts at The Meeting House in Oakville, which raise funds to help rescued girls from the Cambodian sex trade. For years, Kelita performed with a greater emphasis on the country sound; however, in recent years, her music has turned more gospel. The latest album, Heart of a Woman, is an even further deviation from her past releases. "For all my years of recording, I've really had the full production," she said. "This last one, I decided to produce it myself with another producer. It's very paired down. I did everything live off the floor. I sang and played piano and then we embellished some of the tracks with a bit of guitar and bass, just a few sweet mirrors. But basically, it's unplugged." This was the exact feel she was hoping to achieve when she recorded the CD, an album that sounds live. Heart of a Woman also features some of Kelita's popular hits from past albums, some of which have received Juno Award nominations; however, they are performed with that unplugged feel. "It was something that I'd wanted to do my whole career and finally I took the bull by the horn and said I'm doing it," she said. That's exactly what people can expect at the Oakville concert: Kelita's voice and her piano. The show also features comedy and story-telling to go along with the music. "That really has become key to what I do these days. I speak and sing. I share my life and the stories behind the songs and my faith journey. That's a huge element to what I do." Kelita said. The musician encourages anyone to come out to the show for a good time. "People should come out to be encouraged and inspired, given hope and to laugh. I like to take people on a journey and it's sometimes good to laugh and to cry," she said. The concert runs from 7:30-9 p.m. The church is located at 2745 North Ridge Trail.
