Now, she has one of her own, too. The Oakville Christian School teacher was recognized for her contribution with a Champion Teacher recognition award at this year's Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF). "I'm really honoured," Heska said. "It's great because there's a lot of work that goes into it, but it's something the students definitely learn a lot from, so it's a worthwhile program." The Grade 7 teacher and Grades 6-8 science teacher has been part of the science program at her school for three annual science fairs and has sent a slew of students to BASEF. Further, this year, the school was also awarded as the top elementary school at BASEF. In each of Heska's years, the Oakville Christian School has managed to send at least one student to the Canada-Wide Science Fair, including one student who won a national gold medal. Heska is quick to point out, however the students deserve the praise for their strong showings, as does the school's science program. "A lot of it is because the students see what others have done in previous years, so you have that standard already set," said Heska. "I find the students usually have better proj- SUBMITTED PHOTO Winners: The Oakville Christian School winning science fair team and teacher, in front, from left, Nayiri Houldsworth, Lexi Greyvenstein, Spencer Lapko, Harrison Thomas, Nate Bucher, Michelle Curtis, Courtney Heidary, Maisie McLean and Danielle Grebe. Heska also said she stepped in to head a program noted for sending students to the national contests for more than a decade. "The teacher who was here before me already had a great program established and I just carried on from there," she said. The school also gives students a lot of class time to work on their science fair projects. "This lends a lot of value to the science program," Heska said. "I think it recognizes the amount of work we do, but also the value of it, in terms of learning for the students." The BASEF awards ceremony takes place Saturday, March 31. The award includes a plaque and a $100 award to be used in the classroom. There were a number of other Oakville winners at BASEF this year. The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Pinnacle student team of Manjot Sangha and Dennis Xu, from Iroquois Ridge High School, took home the best-in-fair award. Their project was called Construction of Folate Conjugated Antibodies to Target Shigella flexneri to Specifically Infect Colorectal Cancer Cells. The team also took home a number of other awards, including the best high school project. Third place went to Kaushar Mahetaji from W. H. Morden Public School for his project Corresponding With the Brain. The project also won the best junior project award. Joining the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Pinnacle team at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in May is Abbey Park High School's Eisha Ahmed. Mahetaji will not be the only Oakville elementary school student heading to this year's Canada Wide Science Fair, joining him are HwiWon Jang and John Mikhaeil, both from King's Christian Collegiate, and competing individually. King's Christian Collegiate also won the top high school award.
