The 2012 Pledge Drive calls on local fundraisers to help raise money to support hydrocephalus clinical research at SickKids. Hydrocephalus is a lifethreatening and debilitating condition that creates a buildup of fluid inside the skull, leading to brain swelling. As there is currently no cure, the condition can cause brain damage, disability and even death. "We started talking about the fundraiser and Koen said `Oh, I want to do it. I want to help out the kids at the hospital'," Dawn said. "So I told him I would sign him up." Beginning on Feb. 27, the Brookdale Public School senior kindergartner needed only to raise $500 by March 14 in order to be eligible for the incentive for fundraisers -- taking part in the Inside Line Experience (ILE) at the Toronto Supercross (held at the Rogers Centre in March) where participants could meet their favourite professional dirt bike riders. "I wanted to help the kids so they get to go home to their moms, too... They are my friends (too) so I want them to get better and then they can play." Koen McLeod, 5 Koen, along with his parents and younger sister, Raea, would go door-todoor every night for onetwo hours; on weekends he would sometimes be out for up to four hours with his mom or dad collecting funds for the cause. Unsatisfied with the minimum $500 goal, Koen raised a total of $3,300 in two weeks, surpassing his own personal goal of $3,000. Most kids would have been content with that accomplishment, but Koen decided he could do more and set his goal even higher for the second phase of the pledge drive, which allows fundraisers to continue collecting funds until April 12 at 5 p.m. -- the youngster has until that time to raise as much as he can to benefit the hospital. This Friday (April 6), Koen and his family will be at Holland Park Garden Galleries, 2243 Fairview Street in Burlington for the garden centre's Easter Extravaganza and as part of his fundraising effort. Koen told the Oakville Beaver, via an e-mail sent to the publication, that he feels happy about helping other children, especially those sick in hospital. "I wanted to help the kids so they get to go home to their moms too... They are my friends (too) so I want them to get better and then they can play," he said. As for his proud mom, Dawn says she is pretty amazed by her son taking on such responsibility at a young age. "It's not just the fact that he said he wanted to do it, but that he's actually taking action and that by missing a day he's upset about it," she said. "It's really good to see that he knows what he's doing will make a difference and that he's putting in the effort and that he's not just saying that he wants to do it. I'm definitely a proud mom."
