"We are seeing an increase, it's not huge, but people are delaying testing for HIV and waiting much longer when they notice they have a couple of symptoms, and that's a concern for us," says McClemont. He said the symptoms associated with HIV are not unique and generally result in a general ill feeling. "It's AIDS where you might see more severe symptoms," he said, pointing to skin and throat lesions, weight loss and bowel problems. Pointing to a high-profile case that saw an HIV positive Hamilton man charged with first-degree murder following the deaths of two of his sexual partners, McClemont said negative media attention could further prevent people from getting tested. "That is something that doesn't represent most people with HIV/AIDS...how that person was demonized, it scares others into not wanting to get tested." Logan says it seems individuals have grown tired of HIV/AIDS warnings. "In the `80s there was lots of awareness. I hear some- times that the message has been diluted or it's been out there for so many years, that people have a `we know all about it' attitude." This rings especially true for young women. There has been an unprecedented increase in the rate of infection in females between the ages of 18 and 25. "Younger women are not getting the message.
