www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, March 7, 2012 · 10 Landsberg to speak at Women's Day gala It will be an evening of celebration and reflection, when Oakville women gather to mark International Women's Day tomorrow (March 8). A fundraising dinner will feature journalist Michele Landsberg as guest speaker. The evening will benefit SAVIS (Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services), as well as Canadians in Support of Afghan Women (CSAW). The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911. For the last 101 years, women around the globe have marked March 8 with celebrations of female successes, achievements and challenges. "We try to inspire people who come so that they will leave committed to work for a more loving, peaceful world based on gender equality, and respect and opportunity for all people," said organizer Bev LeFrancois. "Tickets are selling well -- everyone wants to hear Michele Landsberg speak." Landsberg, a well-known former journalist, is widely recognized for her advocacy on behalf of women. Along with her outspoken columns, she has worked on behalf of assaulted women and global feminism. She has also been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. For 30 years, the Women of Halton Action Movement (WHAM) has been putting on International Women's Day events. The annual fundraising dinner, organized for the last 12 years, has become a popular and successful local event. LeFrancois says it is important the evening raise money for both local and international organizations working to support women. The two organizations have a natural connection, as CSAW was started by SAVIS Michele Landsberg staff in 1998 (when the organization was known as the Halton Rape Crisis Centre). Organizers are expecting as many as 700 women for the event at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre on Wyecroft Road. It will feature dinner, a silent auction and an Afghan market featuring handmade products made by Afghan women. Tickets cost $50 through SAVIS at 905-825-3622. Hate your kitchen?
