Concerned west-end residents to voice concerns at public meeting tomorrow By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn is asking residents to help him convince the federal government to take another look at its cell tower policies. Flynn announced last week he has launched a petition calling on the federal government to place a moratorium on the installation of cellular transmission equipment on cell towers in residential neighbourhoods until a safe separation distance is established. "Many Oakville residents have expressed health and safety concerns about cell towers being allowed near homes, schools, and other inappropriate locations and existing towers being used for commercial cell services," said Flynn. "I share their concerns and call on Industry Canada to take action to ensure the safety and protection of Oakville residents." Health and safety concerns have been raised about the cell tower at the Bronte Road and Rebecca Street fire station being used for commercial purposes. The Halton Regional Police Service Board voted Thursday, to allow its chair to execute a cell site licence agreement with Bell Mobility. The agreement would give Bell colocation privileges on the police service's Bronte Road/ Rebecca Street cell tower for a 10-year term with the option to renew for an additional fiveyear term for $18,677 per year, Kevin Flynn which would also increase annually at a rate of four per cent with a total off-setting revenue of $224,000. The board also voted to authorize the chair to execute a site licence agreement with Bell Mobility to allow the police service to use Bell's Brookville tower for a 15-year term with an option to renew for an additional fiveyear term for an amount of $18,677 per year, which will increase annually at a rate of four per cent and not exceed a total operating cost of $374,000. Halton police have said this arrangement is essential to overhaul what Police Chief Gary Crowell has described as Halton's failing emergency radio system. Residents will be discussing their health and safety concerns about the cell tower at a public meeting Thursday, March 1. Organized by local residents and Ward 1 councillors Ralph Robinson and Alan Johnston, the meeting will begin at 7 p.m., at the Church of the Nazarene, 320 Bronte Rd. "I am concerned," said Wendy Cockburn, who lives a few hundred metres from the tower. "Some people say there is absolutely no harm that can come from these cell anten- Flynn calls on feds for review of cell towers nas being located directly above your head or in community sensitive areas with schools and homes. However, there is a lot of proof and evidence that has come out over the past 10 years that say cell towers are harmful to health."
