The celebration involved presentations by students, speeches by school administration and dignitaries, including Oakville MP Terence Young, and student musical performances. The new elementary school is called École élémentaire du Chêne, named for the oak tree, one of the symbols of Oakville. The high school, École secondaire Gaétan Gervais, is named in honour of one of the creators of the Franco-Ontarian flag. Gervais is also an author, historian, and teacher. The school has approximately 75 elementary (Kindergarten-Grade 6) students and an equal number of high school students. High school begins in Grade 7 in the French school system and École secondaire Gaétan Gervais currently goes up to Grade 9. Each year, another grade will be added until it includes Grade 12.
