29 · Friday, February 24, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Corpus Christi h f foils l Wildcats ld again As Nicholas Howie watched his White Oaks team preparing for the midget boys basketball season, he thought it had potential for something special. "I thought we had the height, the speed. I thought this was going to be a good season," the Grade 9 student said. And it was. For the second straight year, the midget Wildcats went undefeated in the regular season. Unfortunately, for the second straight year, they ran into the Corpus Christi Longhorns in the playoffs. The Longhorns closed out Wednesday's Halton midget boys basketball final at Sheridan College with a 9-0 run, capped by Sukhdeep Kooner's game-winning jumper with 25 seconds to play, to down White Oaks 35-33. Led by Howie, who scored most of his 15 first-half points on hard drives to the basket, the Wildcats took a 21-12 lead into halftime. The Longhorns managed to cut that lead to one by the end of the third quarter but White Oaks, which averaged a league-high 57 points this season, pulled away again with a six-point run to open the final quarter. However, the Longhorns shut down the Wildcats offence over the final six minutes. Corpus Christi tied the game with 3:25 to play and things stayed that way until Kooner's game-winning basket. White Oaks got a final chance to tie, but the ball rolled off the rim as time expired. "We were so close," said Howie, who finished with a game-high 23 points. "It just came down to those last few minutes. They made some clutch threes and outrebounded us." Korey Loi had four points for the Wildcats while Hadee Lone had three. It was the second year in a row Corpus Christi has handed White Oaks' midgets their only loss of the season. Last year, after a 7-0 season by the Wildcats, Corpus Christi edged them 46-42 in the quarter-finals. Both teams came into this year's final with undefeated records. After a 6-0 regular season, White Oaks routed St. Thomas Aquinas 62-14 in the quarter-finals and then advanced to the final with a 53-35 victory over Nelson. -- Herb Garbutt AWESOME IN ALLISTON: The Oakville minor bantam white Flames won the Bradford Blue and Gold Classic Tournament recently in Alliston.
