After finishing her long career with the local hospital, Savage became heavily involved with the Oakville Historical Society. She led numerous initiatives with the society, involving the town with Doors Open Ontario and the Picnic in the Park event, which is now known as the Mayor's Picnic. Savage led fundraising initiatives for the organization and spoke in local schools about Oakville's history. Her friends say she knew the history of Oakville better than anyone. "If you wanted to know something about Oakville's history, you could always go to Barb," said longtime friend Joy Parsons, who was CEO of OTMH during the time Savage worked there as a nurse. Savage was instrumental in the Town of Oakville being awarded with the Prince of Wales Prize for municipal heritage leadership in 2010. She's always been a big supporter of the Oakville Hospital Foundation. Her friends say she was one of the key individuals who brought the community feel to the hospital. "She'll be remembered for playing a major role in creating the hospital family," said Lamb. Savage had been married to the late William Savage. She is survived by three children, Susan Murray, Julia Gabura and Ben Savage and grandchildren, Jillian and Tori Gabura. A service of remembrance will be held for Savage on Friday, Feb. 24 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 89 Dunn St., at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oakville Hospital Foundation's new hospital campaign.
