Skate Oakville members sharp at Snowflake meet Skate Oakville members combined to win 22 medals, including five gold, at the recent Skate Canada Central Ontario Metro West Snowflake Skate Competition in Mississauga. Lauren Service (Introductory A, Flight 1), Natalie Walker (Introductory B, Flight 1), Zoe Defrang (Pre-Preliminary STARSkate Women's Freeskate, Flight 1), Madison Shaw (Junior Bronze A Women's Freeskate, Flight 1) and Kimberley Campbell (Adult Silver STARSkate Women's Freeskate) were Skate Oakville's event winners. Silver medals went to Madeline Wright (Pre-Preliminary A Women's Freeskate, Flight 1), Lauren Jarman (Pre-Preliminary B Women's Freeskate, Flight 2), Melanie McQueen (Pre-Preliminary B Women's Freeskate, Flight 3), Hailey Roseland-Barnes (Preliminary A Women's Freeskate, Flight 2), Alexander Moses (Preliminary A Men's Freeskate), Katryna Hawrylak (Junior Bronze A Women's Freeskate, Flight 1), Genevieve Harris (Gold STARSkate Women's Freeskate) and the team of Kaitlyn Chubb and Alexander Moses (Ice Dances Couples Preliminary). Local synchro swimmers help team qualify for Ontario Winter Games Two local residents are part of the Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club's 11-12 Red team that will compete in the Ontario Winter Games next month. Emma Macartney, a Grade 4 student at Dearcroft Montessori School, and Madison Finlay, a Grade 6 student at Montclair Public School, helped the BSSC team earn a trip to the Games by finishing second at a qualifying event last month in Waterloo. Minor bantam Vikes win Niagara title Select company didn't intimidate the Oakville minor bantam Vikings at the recent Gene Harrington Winter Ice Experience hockey tournament in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The Vikings, who play in the Minor Oaks Hockey Association's minor development house league division, went undefeated against select teams from Toronto, Buffalo and Chicago. Oakville outscored its opposition by a 21-3 count to win four games and tie the other. In the championship game, the Vikings surrendered a goal late in the third period to Forest Hill, tying the game 2-2. Oakville, however, bounced back to win the game in the second overtime period. Members of the team are Turner Simpson, Darryl Young, Cal MacDonald, Jacob Gorski, Jack Berczi, Brendan Hackl, Chris Howarth, Luca Tomic, Matt Scheiderbanger, Kevin Power, Jason Stanbury, Alex Ishmael, Eric Brunelle, Chad Arthur, Ryan Collins and Jordan Mabbott. Scott Arthur and Mike Hackl coach the team, Gary Scheiderbanger is the trainer and Peter Berczi is the manager. The Gene Harrington Winter Ice Experience is seen as the premier tournament in western New York and draws teams from Ontario, New York, Massachusetts and Illinois. Half marathon adds relay The Oakville Half Marathon has added a 10-kilometre student relay to its list of events for the 2012 event. The student relay will consist of teams of two to four students who each run a section of the 10K distance. Linebacker commits to Mac Abbey Park grad Cole Munden has committed to play football next season for the defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport champion McMaster Marauders.
