"We have an opportunity to put ourselves in the shoes of thousands of hurting Canadians for an hour or two through this walk and make a positive impact," David Di Sabatino, KSM executive director, said in the release. "Kerr Street Ministries and the residents of Oakville have been providing help for the present and hope for the future through various fundraising events -- this event puts each donor in the `cold shoes' of those who need our help." The event began last year in Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo where a group of 406 walkers -- including children, youths, families and retirees -- took part and raised $110,000 for the cause, exceeding the organizers' original goal of $40,000. This year, the Coldest Night of the Year WALK has expanded to 15 additional cities across Canada and with the help of an estimated 2,500 walkers and volunteers, organizers hope to reach the goal of raising $300,000 by Feb. 25. Expecting nearly 250 walkers and volunteers in Oakville, KSM hopes to raise $25,000 from its local walk.
